Demet Akalın - Zirve (2010)
Here is to recommend the album 'Zirve' of Turkish Model-come-Pop-Diva Demet Akalın, one of the most famous singers in Turkey.
Like me, vintage 1972, her songs, mostly become summer hits and usually include lyrics about broken relationships, fights and being stronger afterwards. She became famous a decade ago having a relationship with the famous basketball player Ibrahim Kutluay. They broke up and she started her music career with her hit single 'Senin Anan Güzel Mi' and became popular with the hit album 'Unuttum'.
Several albums followed, which all received not only crtical acclaim, but were also hugely successful, with Demet picking up Best Song Award in Kral TV Music Awards 2005, the most prestigious music award in Turkey (similar to the Brits or the Grammys), the Altın Kelebek and MÜYAP Golden Record.
Having been liking her for years, I picked up her album Zirve on holidays last year - her best album yet. Here three tracks which became my favourites for months.
Demet Akalın - Tecrübe
Demet Akalın - Olacak Olacak

Hande Yener - Romeo (2007)
Makbule Hande Özyener, a.k.a. Hande Yener, caught my radar a few years ago while on holidays in Turkey. The chorus 'Romeo, Romeo, Romeo, Romeo....' was hardly to be overheard, and the catchy chorus certainly hammered its way into my head.
Over the past decade, she has introduced different styles to the ever expanding, Turkish pop music scene. Each one of her albums has managed to generate a lot of interest as well as anticipation due to the different styles, genres and rhythms. Besides the different experiments Hande tackles with music, her looks and image - a bit like Madonna - are also going through a constant change which arguably, blend in well with the sort of music she releases at the time. She was nominated for Best Turkish Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2008, only to be beaten by Emre Aydın. Close to 17 million albums sold all over the world.

Lyrics:
Dün hiç yok gibi
Uzak, kasımdan soğuk gibi
Kar yağıyordu yalnızdım
Savaşlar cepheler
Sonra sen geldin
Arasından sislerin
Büyük yakaların vardı
Gösterişliydin
Dedin ki ben Romeo
Gerçek aşkın savaşçısı
Yalnızlık bitti
Sil gözyaşlarını
Kavga etmez sever beni
Romeo Romeo Romeo
Sabaha kadar kucaklar beni
Romeo Romeo Romeo
Hassas tüy gibi
Umut giyindim zırh gibi
Ağlıyordum yalnızdım
Seyirciler sahneler
Çok Teşekkürler Arkadaşlar

Of of Kömür gibi yaniyorum
Of of Ayip midir seviyorum
Of of Hislerimle oynuyorsun
Gir gir gecip duruyorsun
Neden böyle yapiyorsun of!
Of of Kömür gibi yaniyorum
Of of Ben derdimi biliyorum
Of of Düslerime giriyorsun
Bi girdin mi cikmiyorsun
Neden böyle yapiyorsun of!
Ben sadece gölgen oldum
Dur dedigin yerde durdum
Bes para etmez dünyada

Fatih Erkoç - Ellerim Bombos (1992)
Lyrics:
Senden ayrılmadan önce bilmiyordum hiç
Hayatın anlamsızlığını
En güzel şeylerin bile yavan kaldığı
Aklımın ucundan geçmezdi
Senmisin bu hallerde olmama sebep
İnanmak gelmiyor içimden
Oysaki durmaksızın süren kavgalar
Meğer aşkın cilveleriymiş
Ellerim bomboş yüreğimde bir sızı
Ateşe atılmış bir demir gibi kor hala
Ellerim bomboş gözümde yaşlarla
Güneşin kavurduğu bir çöldeyim
Senmisin bu hallerde olmama sebep
İnanmak gelmiyor içimden
Oysaki durmaksızın süren kavgalar
Meğer aşkın cilveleriymiş
Ellerim bomboş yüreğimde bir sızı
Ateşe atılmış bir demir gibi kor hala
Ellerim bomboş gözümde yaşlarla
Güneşin kavurduğu bir çöldeyim
English translation:
My hands are bare
I didnt know how senseless life could be
Before our seperation
I could´t even think of how good moments could become usual
Are you the reason for me to feel this way
I dont want to believe it
In fact, the never ending fights between us
Were just the mood of love
My hands are bare, theres a pain in my heart
Like an iron thrown in fire its still glowing
My hands are bare, with tears in my eyes
Im suffering in a hot desert
Serdar Ortaç - Dansöz (2006)
Born 1970 in Istanbul, Serdar Ortaç today is one of the most popular and successful artists of the Turkish pop scene. While many younger singers enjoyed the support of the more established stars in the country's entertainment industry, such as Sezen Aksu, Serdar was left to fight for himself - and made it to the top. Having received the KRAL (Turkey's answer to MTV) Award for male breakthrough artist in 1994 for his debut album Aşk İçin, which sold over 2 million copies in the Turkish language region, it wasn't until 2006 that I heard of him after getting to know my husband Mehmet and Gee, whom introduced me to a Turkish/Greek/Arabian Club Night 'Yalla' in London's Green Lanes.
Dansöz was one of the first Turkish tracks I grew fond of. It tells - of course - a story of love and a broken heart, rebound and that that there are 'so many fish in the sea', except that that is expressed as 'there are so many dancers (dansöz)'
Serdar Ortaç - Dansöz (2006)
Lyrics:
İtiraf ediyorum sana itiraf.
Başladı yaralı aşklara tadilat
Masumum, dışarıdan daha masumum,
Maalesef, bunun için sana mecburum.
Yüksek uçan kuşun, yüreği sarhoşun.
Acı çeker gibi, kölesi olmuşum.
Kavga edenlere, bana küsenlere.
Yüreği çark edip, geri dönenlere.
Affet diyen kim? Ez geç diyen kim?
Aşktan çeken kim? Benim kadar...
Ölene kadar aşık olamazsın
Birisi çıkar onu anlayamazsın
Sen o tür oyunlara katlanamazsın
Senin bir kalbin var...
Hadi diyelim biri çok deli sevdi
Senin için her şeyi her şeyi verdi
Ya bir gün olur sana bel kıvırırsa?
Binlerce dansöz var...
