David Paparusso, a.k.a David Vendetta, started his career as DJ at Paris-based Radio FG 98.2. *** (see below)
Both, the station and the DJ caught my ears during my first visits to the French metropolis back in 1993/94. Here he met Antoine Clamaran. Both soon started producing tracks together and his popularity rocketed. As reputation in the DJ scene goes, the word soon got round to Roger Sanchez, for whom he also remixed.

My favourite song of his is 'Unidos Para La Musica', part of his 2007 album 'Rendez-Vous'. Vocals come courtesy of Akram.

Demet Akalın - Zirve (2010)

Here is to recommend the album 'Zirve' of Turkish Model-come-Pop-Diva Demet Akalın, one of the most famous singers in Turkey.
Like me, vintage 1972, her songs, mostly become summer hits and usually include lyrics about broken relationships, fights and being stronger afterwards. She became famous a decade ago having a relationship with the famous basketball player Ibrahim Kutluay. They broke up and she started her music career with her hit single 'Senin Anan Güzel Mi' and became popular with the hit album 'Unuttum'.
Several albums followed, which all received not only crtical acclaim, but were also hugely successful, with Demet picking up Best Song Award in Kral TV Music Awards 2005, the most prestigious music award in Turkey (similar to the Brits or the Grammys), the Altın Kelebek and MÜYAP Golden Record.
Having been liking her for years, I picked up her album Zirve on holidays last year - her best album yet. Here three tracks which became my favourites for months.

Hande Yener - Romeo (2007)

Makbule Hande Özyener, a.k.a. Hande Yener, caught my radar a few years ago while on holidays in Turkey. The chorus 'Romeo, Romeo, Romeo, Romeo....' was hardly to be overheard, and the catchy chorus certainly hammered its way into my head.
Over the past decade, she has introduced different styles to the ever expanding, Turkish pop music scene. Each one of her albums has managed to generate a lot of interest as well as anticipation due to the different styles, genres and rhythms. Besides the different experiments Hande tackles with music, her looks and image - a bit like Madonna - are also going through a constant change which arguably, blend in well with the sort of music she releases at the time. She was nominated for Best Turkish Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2008, only to be beaten by Emre Aydın. Close to 17 million albums sold all over the world.

Through a career spanning five decades thus far - move over Madonna! - Ajda Pekkan (born 1946 in Istanbul) has released more than 20 albums and, with Sezen Aksu, is the most commercially successful female Turkish music artist with the sales of over 30 million copies worldwide. Although famed for her music, Ajda started her career as an actress with appearances in almost 50 films. During her music career she has recorded songs in no less than nine languages. Ajda Pekkan - Aynen Öyle (Suat Ateşdağlı Remix)

One of the most prominent Turkish DJs, in my opinion, is currently the best remixer of tracks published by some of the most prominent Turkish vocalists. In 2007, Suat Ateşdağlı released the first of his now infamous compilation mix albums: Bosphorus Night. At the time, I am sure he didn't even dare to dream of the success it achieved. I stumbled across it more or less 'by accident', being a fan of the Arabic sound and looking around for new, fresh dance music in Istanbul. The album was so successful in fact, that Suat released a Vol.2, a Vol.3 and, earlier this year, a Vol.4.
The previous edition included a track by iconic Ajda Pekkan. Funny enough, the original version sounds very Turkish: a bit over the top, almost dramatic, but slow and full of passion. Suat's remixes transforms these tracks. Listen for yourself. And if you like it, I can recommend the entire series of Bosphrus Night: available here and here and here and, finally, here... - but hurry, they sell like hot cakes.

Tarkan (Tevetoğlu) was born 17 Oct 1972 in Alzey, West Germany, and raised in Turkey. In 1997 Sezen Aksu, one of the very established musicians and composers in Turkey, wrote Şımarık (English: Spoiled) for him, which should become famous and make it's rounds very fast in countries with high Turkish population, home and abroad. But it was Australian Holly Valance's version Kiss Kiss, which should take it to world fame.

Hande Yener - Romeo (2007)

Makbule Hande Özyener, a.k.a. Hande Yener, caught my radar a few years ago while on holidays in Turkey. The chorus 'Romeo, Romeo, Romeo, Romeo....' was hardly to be overheard, and the catchy chorus certainly hammered its way into my head.
Over the past decade, she has introduced different styles to the ever expanding, Turkish pop music scene. Each one of her albums has managed to generate a lot of interest as well as anticipation due to the different styles, genres and rhythms. Besides the different experiments Hande tackles with music, her looks and image - a bit like Madonna - are also going through a constant change which arguably, blend in well with the sort of music she releases at the time. She was nominated for Best Turkish Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2008, only to be beaten by Emre Aydın. Close to 17 million albums sold all over the world.
