#10: Disclosure - Boss (2016)

Brothers Howard & Guy Lawrence are Disclosure. Hailing from leafy Reigate, Surrey (England, UK), it's hard to believe that they didn't collaborate with a black vocalist for the lyrics on this track. It's Howard's voice EQed. Genius. And brilliant dance track.

Lyrics:

Yeah she's the boss and I'm an old romantic doing favors, don't look good on paper
But when she looks behind these eyes girl I can see the psychic, and baby I like it

Daft Punk - Burnin' (1997)

Frenchmen Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter are Daft Punk, whom reached significant popularity in the late 1990s house movement in France and met with continued success in the years following, combining elements of house with synth-pop.

Both met in 1987 while attending the Lycée Carnot, a secondary school in Paris. The two became good friends and later recorded demo tracks with others from the school. This eventually led them to form their first (guitar-based) group Darlin' in 1992. But the band failed to impress critics, resulting in Melody Maker (now NME), a UK music must-have at the time, calling them 'a bunch of daft punk'. Guy and Thomas were actually delighted by the review, famously stating that it took them forever to come up with the name Darlin', but Daft Punk just happened. Sure enough, Darlin' soon split and the duo re-formed as said, experimenting with synthesizers.
In 1997 they released their critically acclaimed album Homework, which includes my favourite single Burnin', an instrumental house music track.
The music video for Burnin' pays tribute to Chicago house producers that Daft Punk found inspiration in. The party scene in the video features DJ Sneak, Roger Sanchez, Derrick Carter, Roy Davis Jr., Paul Johnson, Robert Armani and DJ Hyperactive. Thomas and Guy also make brief appearances people at the party.

Röyksopp - What Else Is There? - Trentemøller Remix (2005)

School mates Svein Berge & Torbjørn Brundtland, a.k.a. Röyksopp, hail from Tromsø, Norway. Experimenting with electronic instruments in the early 1990s as a part of their town's techno scene, Röyksopp quote their influences as far flung as Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, Giorgio Moroder, Art of Noise, Vangelis and Erik Satie. They often include references and homages, for instance, Röyksopp Forever to famous electronic pioneers of the 70s, including the likes of Vangelis and these people, and Krautrock, like Tangerine Dream and even Pink Floyd and King Crimson.
Svein and Torbjørn's first single 'So Easy' became popular in the UK after being used in a UK T-Mobile ad. Since the duo's 1998 debut, the duo has gained critical acclaim and popular success around the world.
Apart from their unique electronic style, the pair are known for collaborating with a wide range of vocalists. 2005's What Else is There features the vocals of Swedish Karin Dreijer Andersson from The Knife and Fever Ray. The single release includes a remix by Danish producer Anders Trentemøller, which is by far the best of the lot.
The track was used in the films Cashback (2006) and Meet Bill (2007). Trentemøller's remix was featured in an episode of the HBO TV Show Entourage.

Royksopp - What Else Is There (Trentemoller Remix) - MyVideo

Lyrics:

It was me on that road
But you couldn't see me
Too many lights out, but nowhere near here

It was me on that road
Still you couldn't see me
And then flashlights and explosions

Roads end getting nearer
We cover distance but not together

I am the storm I am the wonder
And the flashlights nightmares
And sudden explosions

I don't know what more to ask for
I was given just one wish

It's about you and the sun
A morning run
The story of my maker
What I have and what I ache for

I've got a golden ear
I cut and I spear
And what else is there

Roads and getting nearer
We cover distance still not together

If I am the storm if I am the wonder
Will I have a flashlights nightmares
And sudden explosions

There's no room where I can go and
You've got secrets too

I don't know what more to ask for
I was given just one wish

Lyrics:

It’s been a cold day since the first time
You were a lonely child
You were a friend of mine

I always had these feelings deep inside
When you do what you do to me you make me lose my mind

So in love in each others eyes
Seeing thru the end of time
Makes me want to try

Just do what you do to me
Do what you do
Just do what you do to me
Do what you do

It’s been a cold day since the first time
You were a lonely child
So in love in each others eyes

Seeing thru the end of time
Makes me want to try
Makes me want to try
Makes me want to try

So in love in each others eyes
Seeing thru the end of time
Makes me want to try

I always had these feelings deep inside
When you do what you do to me you make me lose my mind

Just do what you do to me
you make me lose my mind

Just do what you do to me
you make me lose my mind

Jeans Team - Oh Bauer (2005)

Jeans Team - Oh Bauer (2005)

Lyrics:

Oh Bauer
Nimm mich mit
Früh am Morgen
Auf die Felder
In die Sonne

Oh Bauer
Nimm mich mit
Auf die Felder
Mit dem Glauben an den Tag
Und den Säcken voller Saat

Oh Bauer
Nimm mich mit
Auf die Felder
Mit dem Rechen
Und den Händen
In der Erde
In den Stall
Zu den Tieren
In die Wärme
Zu dem Futter
Und dem Stroh
Die Eimer voller Wasser

Chor:
Wenn Du aufstehst
Musst Du wissen
Was das Tier frisst
Wenn Du fegst
Musst Du Dir vorstellen
können
Wo der Dreck liegt
Im Rhytmus
von Sonne
Und Regen
Bestellst Du
Die Felder Deines Lebens

Oh Bauer
Nimm mich mit
In die Küche
Wenn es blau wird am
Abend

Camouflage - Suspicious Love (1993)

Heiko Maile, Marcus Meyn & Oliver Kreyssig, a.k.a. Camouflage, a German synth-pop trio recorded music from 1983. The Great Commandment, 4 years later bought their breakthrough. 'Love is a Shield' followed in 1989, and 1993 they released 'Suspicious Love', personally my favourite track by them. Their influence is blatant. Mark recommends :-)

Lyrics:
Try to tell me something,
try to tell me how it feels,
build it up to beat it down again,
all the things you're hiding,
all the games you play with me,
build it up to beat it down again.
Suspicious love,
froze my natural laugh,
and I need to change,
but something keeps me here.
I feel I know,
I won't let it grow,
and I need to change,
but something keeps me here,
I refuse to crawl.
Got to tell you something,
got to tell you how it feels,
once built up and beaten down again.
Promises once spoken,
all the warmth you gave to me
Leave me always somehow inbetween.
I'd like to see you crawling.
