Demet Akalın - Zirve (2010)

Here is to recommend the album 'Zirve' of Turkish Model-come-Pop-Diva Demet Akalın, one of the most famous singers in Turkey.
Like me, vintage 1972, her songs, mostly become summer hits and usually include lyrics about broken relationships, fights and being stronger afterwards. She became famous a decade ago having a relationship with the famous basketball player Ibrahim Kutluay. They broke up and she started her music career with her hit single 'Senin Anan Güzel Mi' and became popular with the hit album 'Unuttum'.
Several albums followed, which all received not only crtical acclaim, but were also hugely successful, with Demet picking up Best Song Award in Kral TV Music Awards 2005, the most prestigious music award in Turkey (similar to the Brits or the Grammys), the Altın Kelebek and MÜYAP Golden Record.
Having been liking her for years, I picked up her album Zirve on holidays last year - her best album yet. Here three tracks which became my favourites for months.

The Underdog Project - Summer Jam (2000,'03 &'10)

The Underdog Project has four members: Vic Krishna, Craig Smart (both vocals), DJ Frank (remixes) and AJ Duncan (keyboards). They formed when Vic was visiting Germany and had a jam session with his fellow-Canadian Craig, which went well, so they started recording - mostly demo tapes, but also full-fledged tracks.

The band's most popular track, 'Summer Jam' was one of the biggest pop hits in Europe. At one point, the original released in Germany in November 2000, was on the rotation list of every pop radio station in the country. It also received much attention in the UK and the US, where it was released the year after. MTV Germany and VIVA, a local rival music TV channel at the time, both supported the video, adding even more exposure. The biggest dance radio station in New York City, WKTU, also expressed support for the record and added it to their playlist, as well as market leader Power 96 in Miami.

The track was re-released several times, and features on pretty much every Summer Song Compilation there is.
Most notable was the 2003 version versus the Sunclub, which reached #1 the Dutch and Belgian charts, as well as climbing into the Top20 of several other countries.

Madcon - Glow (Eurovision Final 2010)

Yosef Wolde-Mariam and Tshawe Baqwa are Madcon, a Norwegian Hip-Hop duo formed in 1992. Sixteen years later they would storm to international fame with their breakthrough 'Beggin'. At the heigth of their popularity it only seemed logical for them to entertain at one, if not the biggest international music contest there is: Eurovision was brought to Oslo a year earlier and in 2010 it was the turn of the city by the fjord to host the television event that is followed not only in Europe but as far flung as Australia and New Zealand.
Madcon staged one of the most memorable interval acts of Eurovision. Liking the song anyway, they arranged the world's biggest 'Flashmob', a spine-tingling experience. Enjoy.

Unheilig - Geboren Um Zu Leben (2010)

'Neue Deutsche Härte' ('new German hardness') is a phrase invented by the German music press after the release of debut album 'Herzeleid' (1995) by Rammstein. It describes a music influenced by metal that combines elements from techno and electronica and German lyrics that ephasise the demonstration of power by over-pronouncing certain syllables and letters, like the rolling 'r', in a deep male growl. Led by Der Graf, Unheilig have an oppressive sound. Some tracks on their new album 'Grosse Freiheit' come dangerously close to plagiarism–compare 'Seenot' to 'Bück Dich' or 'Engel'. The upside is that you get more first-rate Teutonic dance-metal, which is never a bad thing. Plus, the unholies are surprisingly diverse in mood and tempo. 'Geboren Um Zu Leben' is the first single from their album.

Kazaky

Watch out for this lot - this promises to be not just another boyband...

Artur Archibaz (Артур Арчибаз), Kyryll Fedorenko (Кирилл Федоренко), Stas Pavlov (Стас Павлов) and Oleg Zhezhel (Олег Жежель) are - Kazaky.
The four Ukrainian boys founded their band last year, having their debut in September with 'In the Middle' and following that up with 'Love' last month. Several key people in Russia's, as well as America's music industry have duly taken note, and, an entourage of very credible DJs have taken up remixing their tracks.
Their image: Provocation. Don't expect lala-songs from boys-next-door Westlife or Boyzone-style; instead, reckon with full-on, in-your-face confident arrogance, oouzing unconventional sexuality: they have abs but wear heels. Their music: American style beats. Their moves: acro-dance with elements of ballet.
Yevhen Tymokhin (Євген Тимохін) and Helena Markova (Елена Маркова) are directing their videos, with the boys doing their own choreography. Their styling is taken care of by Vasylyi Bondarenko (Василий Бондаренко).
