Luomo - Tessio (2003)

Sasu Ripatti, born 1976 in Oulu, Finland, has many aliases: Vladislav Delay, Sistol, Conoco and - Luomo.
Sasu's characteristic traits within his music are deep, bubbling synth-bass lines, fractured percussion - often placed freely within the music, long delay repetitions of various sounds, syncopated use of vocal samples, and complicated digital effect processing techniques. An outstanding example is his 2003 release 'Tessio'.

The music of Luomo stretches taut lines between shadowy experimentalism and shining club aspirations of the dancefloor. Full of dark chasms and dangerous sharp edges, the restless experimentation and bitter-tenderness in Luomo’s songs have shattered and reformed expectations of Pop. Tracks like 'Tessio' became the foundation of what was soon known as Microhouse.
But the tropes and vocals made it clear that Sasu is drawing on a wider range of influences: not only Glitch, but also Dub, Trip-Hop, Chicago House, Soul and Disco. Luomo presents each element — icy reverb, stuttering rhythms and brittle synth stabs with crossover Pop appeal that was picked up by major labels.
What makes Luomo different from his other release synonyms, aside from a more overt Pop orientation, is the extensive, sensitive use of vocal samples from a variety of collaborators: all Luomo albums owe much to processed feminine voices, particularly that of Finnish jazz singer Johanna Iivanainen, a vocalist renowned for her timbral and poetic singing. Pensive and polished, rich and sensual, 'The Present Lover', which is the album containing 'Tessio', uses the voice of Johanna Iivanainen, along with that of Antye Greie (AGF), his East German girlfriend.
His creative arrangements have also come to fruition in his fourth Luomo album, 'Convivial' in 2008. It sees Luomo at his most upfront and extrovert, embracing more overt Pop motives than ever, and features vocal collaborations with not only Iivanainen, but a spectrum of artists, ranging from Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters, which offers a touch of glam, to Chicago House producer Robert Owens. A new Luomo album is due to be released! :-)

Luomo - Tessio (2003)

Lyrics:

I guess you turn me on,
When you're gone,
For me it didn't go wrong,
we just made another song.

Off getting it alone,
Never asking if for long,
It's just that the world ain't enough,
And it never was for the two of us.

Baby, it's ok.

I guess you made me warm,
When you do the hum,
Making everybody come,
Getting creative with your charm.

I tried to be all yours,
Over line ain't answering your calls,
Don't say it's false,
I'm only following my thoughts.

Baby it's ok,
We'll make it better,
Baby, I, I'll survive,
Without these women in my life.

Everything But The Girl - Missing by MeGustaTuMusica

Lyrics:

I step off the train
I'm walkin' down your street again
And pass your door
But you don't live there anymore
It's years since you've been there
And now you've disappeared somewhere
Like outer space
You've found some better place

And I miss you
(Like the deserts miss the rain)
And I miss you
Oh
(Like the deserts miss the rain)

Could you be dead?
You always were two steps ahead
Of ev'ryone
We'd walk behind while you would run
I look up at your house
And I can almost hear you shout, down to me
Where I always used to be

And I miss you
(Like the deserts miss the rain)
And I miss you
(Like the deserts miss the rain)

Back on the train
I ask why did I come again
Can I confess?
I've been hangin' 'round your old address
And the years have proved
To offer nothin' since you moved
You're long gone
But I can't move on

And I miss you
Oh-oh (Like the deserts miss the rain)
And I miss you, yeah
(Like the deserts miss the rain) And I miss you

I step off the train
I'm walkin' down your street again
Pass your door
I guess you don't live there anymore
It's years since you've been there
And now you've disappeared somewhere
Like outer space
You've found some better place

And I miss you
(Like the deserts miss the rain)
And I miss you, yeah
(Like the deserts miss the rain)
And I miss you, and I miss you
(Like the deserts miss the rain)
And I miss you, yeah
(Like the deserts miss the rain)

Deserts miss the rain
(Like the deserts miss the rain) Like the deserts miss the rain
(Like the deserts miss the rain)

Mylène Farmer

There is so much to say about Mylène Jeanne Gautier, a.k.a Mylène Farmer, born in 1961 in Pierrefonds, Quebec, Canada, that it is hard to narrate.

One thing is for sure: after discovering her to fit my musical taste, I would like to thank my friends Gwen, Florence and Laurent for introducing me to more of her work and making possible for me to attend the best live concert I have ever been to.

Mylène has sold more than 25 million records and is among the most successful recording artists of all time in France, so far landing ten #1s, which constitutes a record in the French Charts.
Her parents moved from France in the late 1950s as her father pursued an engineering contract on a dam. The family returned to France when she was eight, settling in the Parisian suburb of Ville d'Avray. At the age of 17 she discovered acting and took a course at a drama school in Paris. Changing her name to Mylène Farmer as a tribute to her idol, 1930s Hollywood actress Frances Farmer, she began to earn a living as a model acting in several TV ads. In 1984, Mylène met Laurent Boutonnat, a young film student, after replying to a newspaper ad for an actress for a small film he was working on. They became friends and forged a creative partnership, writing and producing the music. Boutonnat, whose ambition was to become a film director, was the force behind Mylène’s videos, which, as you will see, often become epic pieces.
Mylène gained fame with songs featuring shocking yet poetic lyrics, and explicit music videos: 'Maman a tort' was about the love of a young girl for her female hospital nurse. 'Pourvu qu'elles soient douces' contains hints of sodomy: the video, set in the 18th century, featured a caning. 'Libertine' is said to feature the first full frontal nudity appearance by a singer on a major music video. 'Que mon cœur lâche' was about love with condoms in the age of AIDS: the video for the song features a scene in which God tells Jesus he will not send him to Earth again because the last time 'it was a disaster'.
By the turn of the decade Farmer was a full-blown superstar in France, but it wasn't until the release of her third album, L'Autre..., and single 'Désenchantée' that she became iconic. The album's lead single, became a phenomenon in French pop music, striking a universal chord with its political lyrics. The song debuted at #12 in France and hit #1 two weeks later, remaining 9 weeks atop of the charts. Following the phenomenal success of 'Désenchantée', Mylène released three more singles from the album: 'Regrets', 'Je t'aime mélancolie' and 'Beyond My Control', the latter having a blood-and-sex-charged video that was banned from airplay. The success of the singles helped its album sell close to 2 million copies in France alone, having achieved Diamond status in 1992. It spent a then-record 20 weeks at #1 of the French charts, as well as topping the chart in Belgium and making top 10 in Canada. It has become Farmer's best selling studio album. On 14 November 1991 a man, who had been stalking her, entered the Polydor Records HQ in Paris and held employees at gunpoint demanding to talk to her. The man had previously written the singer some fan mail, which she did not respond to. He killed a receptionist and committed suicide. Following this occurrence Mylène shunned media attention and left France to live in Los Angeles for a few weeks.
During her time in California, Mylène started to write her fourth album, Anamorphosée, before inviting Laurent Boutonnat over there to reconcile after the bitter incidents of 1994 and to start making music together again. In summer 1996 she embarked on her second, hugely successful, concert tour, which I was lucky enough to see at Paris Bercy, the French equivalent to Wembley. The corresponding live album, is currently the best-selling French live album ever. Mylène Farmer's Discography

Modern Talking

You can see I by now have been off sick for a week, can't you..? LOL no, not sick in the head, as you may think and spit right now - to resort to Modern Talking, of all things..., haha.
Seriously though, if this doesn't make you weep for what you have spend you precious pocket money back then, you may at perhaps shed a tear for nostalgic reasons. Those clothes, this hair, those tunes...

Modern Talking 1985

First formed at the end of 1984, Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders unexpectedly became immensely popular with their synthpop hit single 'You're My Heart, You're My Soul', with which they occupied the No.1 position in 35 countries including, of course, in Germany, where the single perched at the top for six consecutive weeks. Dieter Bohlen, wary of he was about to hit the world with, wrote the song under the synonym Steve Benson.
The single eventually went on to sell 8 million copies worldwide!
During their two year peak, between 1985 and 1987, Modern Talking were successful in Europe, Asia, South America, Middle East, particularly in Iran, where all Western pop music was banned after the 1979 Islamic revolution. In the United Kingdom they entered the Top5 only once with the song 'Brother Louie'. Like most European pop acts, they were almost unknown in North America, never appearing in the US charts, although they did become one hit wonders in Canada when 'Brother Louie'. They released two albums a year, while also promoting their singles on TV all over Europe, eventually selling a breathtaking 65 million records within three years!

... and better they did, because already in late 1986 people in Germany were getting increasingly fed up with the same old stuff, they started buying their singles only to roll over and destroy them with all kinds of machinery. Clearly Modern Talking had missed the boat on trends in the music industry and the success began to fizzle out. Just look at the slipping peak chart positions with every new single release.
Eventually people started bitching about Thomas Anders' fake perma-tan, his supposed-girlfriend 'Nora' (blimmin'!), which appeared to muscle in ever more into their band business. All this was a welcome reason for Dieter Bohlen to call it all off and make his own way. A bitter, very public and most times sub-intelligent media feud started, mostly to blame on Dieter Bohlen, who persistently and very openly took the mickey (to say the very least) out of Thomas Anders.

After the duo split up in 1987, Dieter formed his own project Blue System and - miraculously - enjoyed several high chart positions with tracks like 'Sorry Little Sarah' and 'My Bed Is Too Big', continuing in his commercial, out-of-touch style.
Thomas went solo and recorded some of his new pop-like material in Los Angeles and London. As a solo artist, he toured in places like Moscow, Sun City, Hong Kong and Santiago de Chile during which time he would sing songs from his pop solo albums, in the meantime keeping his fans satisfied with former Modern Talking material. He recorded five solo albums in English and one album in Spanish. Unsurprisingly, he found more success in foreign countries than at home.
Despite all the quarrels and disagreements that Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders experienced between themselves in the past, they began keeping in touch again after Anders moved back to Germany in 1994.

In the beginning of 1998 the duo reunited, and had their first performance together on Germany's biggest TV show 'Wetten, dass..?' They re-started things off with the re-packaged version of their single 'You're My Heart, You're My Soul', though the single no longer sounded like a Europop track, instead it was a typical up-tempo Eurodance number featuring rapper Eric Singleton on the rap vocals. Their first comeback album Back for Good which included four new tracks as well as all of the previous hits redone with modern techniques stayed at number one position in Germany for five consecutive weeks and managed to top the charts in 15 countries, eventually selling 6 million copies worldwide.

Modern Talking 2002

The duo won the award at World Music Awards for being the Best Selling German Band that year.
Bohlen and Anders followed 1980s Modern Talking pattern as they chose to release two singles from each album as in the past. A series of singles and four more albums followed.
After reaching the point where they had already collected over 400 gold and platinum awards worldwide, Modern Talking decided to split up again in 2003, just before the release of another of their album compiled of best-songs. The second break-up seemed to have again been triggered mainly from the negative portrayal of Thomas by Dieter written in his autobiographical book published at the end of 2003.
In the course of all the disputes which eventually drove the duo to its break-up, Bohlen was involved in 'Deutschland sucht den Superstar', the German edition of the UK's Pop Idol.
Modern Talking is considered as the most successful German band ever and with over 120 million albums sold in the top 30 worldwide. Only artists such as ABBA, Elvis Presley, the Rolling Stones or The Beatles outrank Modern Talking internationally.

Deadmau5 & Kaskade - I Remember (2008)

Ryan Raddon, a.k.a. Kaskade

In 2008, Canadian Producer Joel Zimmermann, a.k.a. Deadmau5 and US American DJ Ryan Raddon, a.k.a. Kaskade, hired singer-songwriter Haley Gibby to record one of my favourite tunes that some would classify as Progressive House.

Joel Zimmermann, a.k.a. Deadmau5

There are two video versions, a 10-minute short film and an edited 4-minute version, produced by Anthony & Christopher Donnelly of Mancunian Gio-Goi fame. The video stars Stephen Graham, Warren Brown, Aston Kelly, Greg Walsh & also ex-Coronation Street actress Emma Edmondson. It was filmed in Manchester, with Stephen talking to Warren and Astn about life and rave culture. The two young men then proceed to find a suitable venue for, what is later revealed to be, an illegal rave with Deadmau5 performing as the DJ.
Stephen was almost arrested after police mistook the video for a genuine illegal rave.

Ofra Haza - Im Nin'Alu (1988)

Don't you worry, I won't suddenly get all religious on you, but there is a track that is really quite beautiful. You may remember it from 1988 when Ofra Haza took Europe by storm with it - it stayed 9 weeks at DE#1 in the summer that year...

But it dates back much further than this: 'Im Nin'alu' (אם ננעלו) is a Hebrew poem by Shalom Shabazi (שלום שבזי) and was written in the 17th century, when he was a well-respected Rabbi in what is now the state of Yemen.
The poem starts 'Im nin'alu daltei n'divim - daltei marom lo nin'alu. El Chaiiiiiii....' (If the doors of the wealthy are locked, the doors of Heaven will never be locked. The living God.)
Ofra Haza first sang this song with the Shechunat Hatikva Workshop Theatre, appearing on IBA's General Television in 1978. The remixed version of the song, produced by Izhar Ashdot, is the one that hit the charts ten years later. The single sold some three million copies worldwide, making it one of the first World Music recordings to cross over to mainstream Pop. Even though Ofra's version of the song shows her own interpretation, and its presentation was modern and popular, it still fits in with the Yemenite tradition that she represented.
The original version was included on the 1984 album Yemenite Songs, also known as Fifty Gates of Wisdom. The remixed version was part of her international debut Shaday.
In 1997 she re-recorded the track for her album Ofra Haza, produced by Frank Peterson of Enigma and Gregorian.

Since then, the track has been covered - and most of all sampled - endless times: Rap duo Eric B. & Rakim used it in their single 'Paid In Full', Snoop Dogg used the same sample on his remake of 'Paid In Full' titled 'Paper'd Up'. Canadian band Delerium sampled the lyrics in their song 'Hidden Mask' from their 1989 album Faces, Forms & Illusions.
American Rap group Public Enemy also sampled the opening few seconds of the song (which are a cappella) on the track 'Can't Truss It', featured on the 1991 album Apocalypse '91...The Enemy Strikes Black. The song features very briefly as background music in a restaurant at the beginning of the 2000 film American Psycho. In 1998 Swedish DJ team C&N Project included a sample of the opening line Im nin'alu on their single 'The Queen of Tel Aviv', which was credited to C&N Project Feat. Ofra Haza. Israeli singer Michal Cohen performs 'Im Nin'alu' on La Kahena (2005) by DJ Cheb i Sabbah. Part of the song appears in Madonna's song "Isaac" from her 2005 album Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005). Im Nin'alu is the opening track on Eliyahu & The Qadim Ensemble's album Eastern Wind (2009) with vocals by Rachel Valfer.
And - in 2009 Panjabi MC remixed this song on his album named Indian Timing.

Ofra Haza was born the youngest of nine children in the poor Tel Aviv neighborhood of Hatikvah. Inspired by a love of her Yemeni Jewish culture, the appeal of her musical art quickly spread to a wider Middle Eastern audience, somehow bridging the divide between Israel and the Arab countries. As her career progressed, the multi-lingual Haza was able to switch between traditional and more commercial singing styles without jeopardizing her credibility. The music, too, fused elements of Eastern and Western instrumentation, orchestration and dance-beat.
Ofra Haza died on 23 February 2000 at the age of 42, of AIDS-related pneumonia. While the fact of her HIV infection is now generally acknowledged, the decision by the major Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz to report about it shortly after her death caused controversy in Israel.

English Translation:

If there be no mercy left in the world,
The doors of heaven will never be barred.
The Creator reigns supreme, and is higher
than the angels
All, in His spirit, will rise

By His nearness, His life-giving breath
flows through them.
And they glory in His name
From the moment of genesis,
His creations grow,
Captivating and more beautiful.

The wheel in his circle thunders
Acclaiming His Holy name
Clothed in the glory of His radiance,
The six-winged cherubs surround Him,
Whirling in His honor
And with their free wings sweetly sing,
Together, in unison

Alcatraz - Give Me Luv (1996)

Jean-Phillippe Aviance & Victor Imbres, a US house production team from Washington, DC, under the synonym Alcatraz released a track that would become the must-have item in any DJ box at the turn of 1995/1996 and the subsequent spring. It should remain their one and only single but lead to several remixes for big names at the time, including Apollo 440, Lil Mo' Yin Yang and BT. Following Alcatraz, Victor then teamed up with Ruth Rothwell in the UK and formed Greenlight Records in 1997. The label soon churned
out some very classic tunes. He continued making dance house records until 1999. During that year Victor lost interest in music and decided to go back to college to pursue computer programming. But he soon returned to music in 2006. Over the past few years his love of music has developed back into the same creative passion he once had in the 90’s. Victor is behind epic tracks, such as Fragma's 'I Need A Miracle', De Lacy's 'Hide Away', Sandy B.'s 'You Make The World Go Round' and - ahem - Alcatraz's 'Give Me Luv':

David Vendetta feat. Akram - Unidos Para La Musica (2007)

David Paparusso, a.k.a David Vendetta, started his career as DJ at Paris-based Radio FG 98.2. *** (see below)
Both, the station and the DJ caught my ears during my first visits to the French metropolis back in 1993/94. Here he met Antoine Clamaran. Both soon started producing tracks together and his popularity rocketed. As reputation in the DJ scene goes, the word soon got round to Roger Sanchez, for whom he also remixed.

My favourite song of his is 'Unidos Para La Musica', part of his 2007 album 'Rendez-Vous'. Vocals come courtesy of Akram.

Lyrics:

You
You

You are still a whisper on my lips
A feeling at my fingertips
That's pulling at my skin

You leave me when I'm at my worst
Feeling as if I've been cursed
Bitter cold within

Days go by and still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Days go by and still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Without you
Without you

You are still a whisper on my lips
A feeling at my fingertips
That's pulling at my skin

You leave me when I'm at my worst
Feeling as if I've been cursed
Bitter cold within

Days go by and still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Without you

Lyrics:

On a bridge across the Severn on a saturday night,
Susie meets the man of her dreams.
He says that he got in trouble and if she doesn't mind
He doesn't want the company
But there's something in the air
They share a look in silence and everything is understood
Susie grabs her man and puts a grip on his hand as the rain puts a tear in his eye.

Don't let go
Never give up, it's such a wonderful life
Don't let go
Never give up, it's such a wonderful life

Driving through the city to the temple station,
Cries into the leather seat
And Susie knows the baby was a family man,
But the world has got him down on his knees

So she throws him at the wall and kisses burn like fire,
And suddenly he starts to believe
He takes her in his arms and he doesn't know why,
But he thinks that he begins to see

Don't let go
Never give up, it's such a wonderful life
Don't let go
Never give up, it's such a wonderful life
Don't let go
Never give up, it's such a wonderful life
Don't let go
Never give up, it's such a wonderful life

Don't let go
Never give up
Don't let go
Never give up, it's such a wonderful life

Wonderful life, wonderful life, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful life
Wonderful life, wonderful life, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful life

Don't let go
Don't let go

Lyrics:

If I was a better man
Would fellow men take me to their hearts
If I was a stronger man
Carrying the weight of popular demand
Tell me would that alarm her
I'd never harm her at all

If I was a soldier
Captive arms I'd lay before her
If I was a sailor
Seven oceans I'd sail to her

If I was a wiser man
Would other men reach out and touch me
If I was a kinder man
Dishing up love for a hungry world
Tell me would that appease her
I want to please her again

If I was a painter
I'd paint a world that couldn't taint her
If I was her leader
On food of love from above I would feed her
If I was a poet
All my love and burning words I would show it
If I was her lover
Her eyes in kisses I would cover

Come here my baby
Oh they can't touch you now
I'll keep you safe and warm
I'll never leave you at all
Come here my baby
Oh they won't touch you
Dishing up love for a hungry world
Tell me would that appease you
I want to please you again

If I was a soldier
Captive arms I'd lay before her
If I was a sailor
Seven oceans I'd sail to her
If I was a painter
I'd paint a world that couldn't taint her
If I was her leader

Cindy Lauper - Shine (Tracy Young Remix)

There is much more to Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper (born 1953 in New York) than just 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun', although that is probably the song she will be remembered forever more.
Six days before her 48th birthday she performed a song at the AIDS Benefit in Vienna's City Hall that would go on to be remixed by several people, including Victor Calderone and Tracy Young. The latter track is the one that hit the clubs; and hit me in particular in a Club in Miami Beach, just yards from Miss Lauper's Florida residence.
The remix also features in one episode of the climactic fifth season of the US version of Queer as Folk, in which Cindy appeared as herself to perform at the show's 'Babylon' gay club.
The first official release of the song appeared on the Shine E.P., a 2002 mini album released to counteract heavy pirating of the material on the then-shelved full length album. The album itself, however, was not released in the U.S., before the official release of the album -exclusively in Japan - a single was released for the song, in a variety of formats. This limited edition was only released in the United States and could only be ordered online. The official name of the single is 'Shine Remixes'.

Lyrics:

Shine I'll stand by you
Don't try and push me away
'cause I'm just gonna stay
You can shine I won't deny you
And don't be afraid it'll all be ok

Do you know my name
Well I ain't gonna take
that big time line
won't be beat by a lie
Gonna call out to these embers
waiting to ignite
Gonna pull you up
By your love, by your love
and tell you

Shine I'll stand by you...

I can see the frown you wear
All around like some faded crown
Like a watch over wound
Gonna call down to this diamond
buried underground
Gonna pull you up
by your love, by your love
and tell you

When it's said and done
What you need will come
and time won't let me
Let you let me waste it this time
shine...

Yesterday's gone, lost in the past
try to hang on but it's fading fast
covered in love, covered in you
can't say no to the things you do

I love the feeling that you're giving me
It's making me better, I can't disagree
No where to run, no where to hide,
When you shine on me

When you shine on me

Shine on me,
shine on me,
shine on me, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeahhh
shine on me, every day and every night

Manuel Reuter, a.k.a. Manian (left), and Yann Peifer, a.k.a. Yanou (right), a German DJ & Production duo, came together in 2008 to release Shine On under the project name R.I.O. The name is concept: hands-in-the-air commercial summer dance tracks. And it seems to work. Manuel also chart-successfully works on his other projects Cascada and, mainly in a remix capacity, Spencer & Hill. Vocals for Shine On come courtesy Tony T.

Lyrics

Open up ya eyes and watch the sun rise
One part of me I've been made clear
Love that goes spread all the world
My love, ya, comes out of devotion
To rule, ya, spread to the world
In Jamestown I'm on my mission
Where we praise the day straight our way
All the nation

Let me be the love that comes form the sun
Let me be your rainbow rising up
Every single race out of space
We'll shine on - shine on!

Let me be the love that comes from the sun
I wanna be your love light from above
Shine on, shine on, shine on!

My love, ya, comes out of devotion
To rule, ya, spread to the world
In Jamestown I'm on my mission
Where we praise the day straight our way
All the nation

Let me be the love that comes from the sun
Let me be your rainbow rising up
Every single race out of space
We'll shine on - shine on!

Let me be the love that comes from the sun
I wanna be your love light from above
Shine on, shine on, shine on!

Laura Branigan - Self Control & Satisfaction (1984)

Laura Ann Branigan was born in 1957 in Brewster, NY, to Italo-Irish parents and began her musical career as early as 1973 in a band called Meadow. Following their break-up, she had several jobs, including being background singer to artists like Leonhard Cohen.
In 1979 she was signed to Atlantic Records, who gave her the chance to write and sing independently. The results were the tracks 'Looking Out For Number One' and an unreleased album called 'Silver Dreams' in 1981.

Her breakthrough came with the release of her self-titled album. 'Gloria' released in 1982, made her a household name in America and Austrlia. It remained in the US Billboard Charts for a whopping 39 weeks, which set a record at the time.
Her European fame came with her third album 'Self Control'. The release of the title track hit the continent like a bomb should also mark the height of her career. The song became her most popular international hit, topping the charts in several countries, most notably West Germany, where it spent seven weeks at DE#1! This is how I got to know her. Oddly enough Laura never really scored high in Italy.
By the time of Branigan's fourth album, 1985's Hold Me, 'Self Control' was a world-wide success. The hits continued with 'Spanish Eddie', 'Hold Me' and 'I Found Someone' (co-written by Michael Bolton, and later a hit for Cher). However, neither song was supported by a music video and stalled in the lower reaches of the Hot 100 chart.
Touch, which was released in 1987, marked a change in Branigan's career. Under new management and using different producers, Branigan took a more active role in her work and in the studio. Touch saw her return to dancefloors with the Stock/Aitken/Waterman-produced 'Shattered Glass'. The album also included a return to the Billboard Top 40 with her cover of Jennifer Rush's 'The Power of Love', which was one of the bestselling singles in the US.
During the height of her career, Branigan also made acting appearances, first in 1981 in An American Girl in Berlin for German television, and then after the success of 'Gloria', guest appearances on American TV series such as CHiPs and Knight Rider. She would later do independent films such as Mugsy's Girls (aka Delta Pi, 1985)and the Australian film Backstage.
Branigan also contributed songs to notable movie and television soundtracks, including the Grammy- and Academy Award-winning Flashdance soundtrack (1983), the Ghostbusters soundtrack (1984), and the Baywatch soundtrack (1994), as well as having songs featured in the popular Grand Theft Auto video game series.
Laura died all too early at her home on Long Island, NY, on August 26, 2004. Her death was attributed to a previously undiagnosed brain aneurysm. Her ashes were scattered over Long Island Sound.

The Killers - When You Were Young (2006)

The Killers formed in 2001. Brandon Flowers (front man), Dave Keuning, Mark Stoermer and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. from Las Vegas, Nevada teamed up after Brandon had left Blush Response, a Synthpop band, when the rest of the band decided to move to California. Seeing an Oasis gig, he decided to move into Rock; and the rest is history.
The Killers draw some of their influences from the music styles of the 1980s, as well as from Bruce Springsteen, which is most notable in their biggest hit so far: When You Were Young, released in 2006 as headline track of their second album Sam's Town. It was certified Diamond in Brazil (500k), Platinum in the US (1mm) and voted #37 by XFM as tracks of all time in 2009.
This song is about growing up and moving on in the world, leaving the past behind you. It deals with how your perceptions change as you look back on your youth.
The music video was filmed in Tlayacapan, Mexico. The visual style being inspired by the films Japón and Batalla en el Cielo both directed by Mexican film director Carlos Reygadas.

The Killers - When You Were Young (Live @ The Royal Albert Hall 2009)

Lyrics:

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now
Here he comes

He doesnt look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined
When you were young

Can we climb this mountain
I dont know
Higher now than ever before
I know we can make it if we take it slow
Let's take it easy
Easy now
Watch it go

We're burning down the highway skyline
On the back of a hurricane
That started turning
When you were young
When you were young

And sometimes you close your eyes
And see the place where you used to live
When you were young

They say the devil's water
It ain't so sweet
You dont have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now
Here he comes

He doesnt look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined
When you were young
(talks like a gentleman)
(like you imagined)
When you were young

I said he doesnt look a thing like Jesus
He doesnt look a thing like Jesus
But more than you'll ever know

Mylène Farmer - Je Te Rends Ton Amour (1999)
FR#10, BE#18

Mylène Farmer - Je te rends ton amour by leebil
Lyrics - incl. English translation:

M'extraire du cadre
Ma vie suspendue
Je rêvais mieux
Je voyais l'âtre
Tous ces inconnus
Toi parmi eux

Extracting myself from the frame
My life, suspended
I dreamt of better.
I saw the hearth
All those unknowns,
You among them

Toile,
Fibre qui suinte
Des meurtrissures
Tu voyais l'âme
Mais j'ai vu ta main
Choisir Gauguin
Canvas,
Fibre that oozes
Bruises
You saw the soul,
But I saw your hand
Choosing Gaugin

Et je te rends ton amour
Redeviens les contours
Je te rends ton amour
C'est mon dernier recours
Je te rends ton amour
Au moins pour toujours
Redeviens les contours
" la femme nue debout "

And I return your love,
Become once more the contours,
I return your love
It's my last resort
I return your love
At least, forever
Become once more the contours
"The naked woman standing"

M'extraire du cadre
La vie étriquée
D'une écorchée
J'ai cru la fable
D'un mortel aimé
Tu m'as trompé

Extracting myself from the frame,
The skewed life
Of a butchered woman
I believed the fable,
Of a beloved mortal
[But] you betrayed me

Toi
Tu m'as laissé
Me compromettre
Je serai " l'Unique "
Pour des milliers d'yeux
Un nu de maître

You,
You allowed me
To compromise myself.
I will be the "unique"
For thousands of eyes
A master's nude

Et je te rends ton amour
Au moins pour toujours
Je te rends ton amour
Le miens est trop lourd
Et je te rends ton amour
C'est plus flagrant le jour
Ses couleurs se sont diluées
Et je reprends mon amour
Redeviens le contour
De mon seul maître : EGON SHIELE et...

And I return your love,
At least forever
I return your love
Mine is too heavy
And I return your love
It is more obvious in the day,
[that] it's colors are diluted
And I return your love,
Become once more the frame
Of my only master: egon shiele and ....

And I return your love,
At least forever
I return your love
Mine is too heavy
And I return your love
It is more obvious in the day,
[that] it's colors are diluted
And I return your love,
Become once more the frame
Of my only master: egon shiele and ....
