Lyrics:

Since you've been gone
I shut my eyes
And I fantasize
That you're here with me

Will you ever return?
I won't be satisfied
Till you're by my side
Don't wait any longer...

Why don't you come back?
Please hurry, Why dont you come back?
Please hurry...
Come back and stay for good this time
Come back and stay for good this time

You said goodbye
I was trying to hide
What I felt inside
Untile you passed me by (Until.....not Untile)

You said you'd return
You said that you'd be mine
Till the end of time
Don't wait any longer!

Why dont you come back?

Please hurry, why don't you come back?
Please hurry...
Come back and stay for good this time
Come back and stay for good this time

Since you've been gone...
Opened my eyes
And I realize
What we had together

Will you ever return?
I'll have you change your mind
If you won't stay mine
Just love me forever!
love me forever...

Why dont you come back?
Please hurry, why don't you come back?
Please hurry, why don't you come back?
Please hurry, why don't you come back?
Please hurry, why don't you come back?
Please hurry!
Just Come back and stay for good this time
Come back and stay for good this time
Come back and stay for good this time
Come back and stay for good this time

Don't ever leave me...

Inna - Hot (2009)

Elena Alexandra Apostoleanu, a.k.a. Inna was born 1986 in Mangalia, Romania. 'Hot' was released in Nov 2008 and became an instant hit due to its infectious melody and lyrics. The formula certainly worked on me. Having heard the versions most continental European countries got I felt sorry for the 'wet flanel' they've been dished, as I think the UK version, remixed by Cahill is miles better.

It also became an airplay success in POR, BRZ, MDV, BUL, LEB, MTA, MOR, LBY, POL, SRB, SYR, TRK, RUS, GRE, PAK & UKR

Lyrics:

People..stop fighting, angels are crying
We can be better, love is the answer
Search inside, are there anymore tears to cry ?
Don't you wonder why ?
Why you feel so alone all against the world
(World, world..)
Search back time, when you used to sing along
To the music of your soul
Song of faith you can change, it's not too late
People..stop fighting, angels are crying
We can be better, love is the answer..
Search inside, are there anymore tears to cry ?
Don't you wonder why ?
Why you feel so alone all against the world

Lyrics:

Robert’s got a quick hand.
He’ll look around the room, he won’t tell you his plan.
He’s got a rolled cigarette, hanging out his mouth he’s a cowboy kid.
Yeah he found a six shooter gun.
In his dads closet hidden in a box of fun things, and I don’t even know what.
But he’s coming for you, yeah he’s coming for you.

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run, outrun my gun…
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,
You better run, better run, faster than my bullet.
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run, outrun my gun…
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,
You better run, better run, faster than my bullet.

Daddy works a long day.
He be coming home late, yeah he’s coming home late.
And he’s bringing me a surprise.
‘Cause dinner’s in the kitchen and it’s packed in ice.
I’ve waited for a long time.
Yeah the sleight of hand is now a quick pull trigger,
I reason with my cigarette,
And say your hair’s on fire, you must have lost your wits, yeah.

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run, outrun my gun…
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,
You better run, better run, faster than my bullet.
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run, outrun my gun…

You better run, better run, faster than my bullet.

RuPaul - Supermodel & Cover Girl

RuPaul Andre Charles was born 1960 in San Diego, California. His name was given to him by his mother, a Louisiana native. The Ru came from roux, an ingredient used in gumbo, a stew or soup originating said US state.

Now unthinkable, but RuPaul struggled as a performer in Atlanta, Georgia during the 1980s and participated in underground cinema, helping create the low-budget film 'Starrbooty', and an album by the same name. In Atlanta, RuPaul often performed at the Celebrity Club with his band, Wee Wee Pole.
In the very early 1990s, RuPaul worked the Georgia club scene and was known by his full birth name, taking on jobs that were borderline legal, namely cross-gender near-porn movies. Later, RuPaul performed solo and in collaboration with other bands at several New York nightclubs, most notably the infamous Pyramid (...top tip, by the way, if you're ever in NYC... ;-)
In 1993, RuPaul recorded dance/house albums which included Supermodel of the World. They were released through the rap label Tommy Boy, spawning the dance track Supermodel (You Better Work). The music video was an unexpected success on MTV channels, as Grunge-Rock (Nirvana) and Gangsta Rap were popular at the time.
Different from many other Drag-Queens, which usually perform with a bitchy attitude, RuPaul adopted a 'love each other' approach. Although he is mostly known as an extravagant Drag-Queen, he has also been taking on roles in movies as a man, usually under his birth name.

Ich & Ich - Vom Selben Stern by Dixvad59

Lyrics:

In unseren Augen warmer Glanz

Lass uns zusammen uns're Bahnen zieh'n

In unseren Augen warmer Glanz

English translation:

From The Same Star

Get up, get dressed
Now other spirits have their turn
I’ll take your pain away, I’ll take your pain away
Window open, music real loud
The last ice has melted
I'll take your pain away, I'll take your pain away

We’re all made of star dust
In our eyes a warm sparkle
We’re still not shattered, we’re whole
You’re from the same star
I can hear your heartbeat
You’re from the same star
I am (I am – I am)
Because the same voice guides you
And you’re hanging by the same thread
Because you think the same thing
I do (I do - I do)

Dance through your room, take off
Dance through the streets
Dance through the city
I’ll take your pain away, I’ll take your pain away
Let’s orbit together
We’re still flying over Berlin today
I’ll take your pain away, I’ll take your pain away

We’re all made of star dust
In our eyes a warm sparkle
We’re still not shattered, we’re whole
You’re from the same star
I can hear your heartbeat
You’re from the same star

Mia. - Tanz Der Moleküle [HD 720p] by Henrietta-Aime-Fumer_Tv

Lyrics:

Ich bin hier,
weil ich hier hingehör.
Vom Kopf bis Fuß bin ich verliebt.
Du bist mutig,
weil du mir,Treue schwörst.
Zwischen all den schönen Souveniers.

Sprich mich an,
in dem Takt,
der dieses Lied zu unserem Hit macht.
Brich den Beat,
mit Gefühl.
Du bist so schön,
weil du lachst.

Uhu...Uhuhuu,
Mein herz tanzt!
Uhuhu!
und jedes Molekül bewegt sich!

Glaubst du wie ich daran,
das alles gut sein kann,
solange wir zusammen sind?

Brich das Eis,
mit dem Schritt,
der jedes Atmen zum Wagnis macht.
Halt mich fest,
Mit Gefühl.
es ist so schön wenn du lachst!

Uhu...Uhuhuu,
Mein herz tanzt!
Uhuhu!
und jedes Molekül bewegt sich!(2mal)
Und jedes Molekül entlädt sich.
Uhu...Uhuhuu,
Mein herz tanzt!
Uhuhu!
und jedes Molekül bewegt sich!
und Jeder biegt und dreht sich.
Mein Herz tanzt
Mein Herz!

English translation:

Dance of the molecules

I am here, because I belong here.
From head to toe I am in love.
You are brave, because you swear to be true to me.
Among all the beautiful souvenirs,
you attract me, in time with the beat,
which makes this song our song,
take up the beat with feeling.
You are so beautiful because you laugh.

Uhuhuhuhuhu, my heart dances.
Uhuhu and every molecule sways itself.

Do you believe as I, that everything can be good,
as long as we are together?
Break the ice, with the step, which makes each breath the adventure.
Hold me tight, with feeling.
It is so nice, when you laugh.

... and every positron discharges itself

And every fiber bends and turns itself.

Falco - Rock Me Amadeus by trashfan

Lyrics:

Ooo rock me Amadeus
Rock me Amadeus...
Rock rock rock rock me Amadeus
Rock me all the time to the top

Er war ein Punker
Und er lebte in der großen Stadt
Es war Wien, war Vienna
Wo er alles tat
Er hatte Schulden denn er trank
Doch ihn liebten alle Frauen
Und jede rief:
Come on and rock me Amadeus

Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus

Er war ein Superstar
Er war so populär
Er war so exaltiert
Because er hatte Flair
Er war ein Virtuose
War ein Rockidol
Und alles rief:
Come on and rock me Amadeus

Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus

Come on and rock me Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus

Es war um 1780
Und es war in Wien
No plastic money anymore
Die Banken gegen ihn
Woher die Schulden kamen
War wohl jedermann bekannt
Er war ein Mann der Frauen
Frauen liebten seinen Punk

Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus

Come and rock me Amadeus...

Baby baby do it to me rock me
Baby baby do it to me rock me
Baby baby do it to me rock me
Ja ja ja
Baby baby do it to me rock me
Baby baby do it to me rock me
Baby baby do it to me rock me

Herbert Grönemeyer - Männer (1984)

It may be hard to believe now, but Herbert Grönemeyer, today possibly the most successful German musician of all time, with the two top-selling CDs ever in Germany, was not an overnight success. Born in Göttingen on 12 April 1956, he grew up in Bochum in Germany’s industrial Ruhr region. His first five albums (1978-1983) were only modest successes, and Grönemeyer had to cancel planned tours. It was not until the release of his 'Bochum' album in 1984 that Grönemeyer was finally able to reach the top of the German music charts with the hit singles 'Männer' ('Men') and 'Flugzeuge im Bauch' ('Airplanes in my stomach'). Named for his hometown, 'Bochum' finally put Grönemeyer on the pop music map in German-speaking Europe. To this day, that album’s title song is Grönemeyer’s anthem at any live concert.
While he was recording his first several albums and having trouble achieving his musical breakthrough, he was also acting in films and TV series. In the English-speaking world, Grönemeyer is probably best known as the naive reporter Leutnant Werner aboard the submarine in the classic German anti-war movie 'Das Boot' (The Boat, 1981), directed by Wolfgang Petersen, who later went to Hollywood.
By 1992, Grönemeyer had reached a level of success and popularity that earned him Germany’s top entertainment honour, the Echo Award for Best National Artist. Two years later, in 1994, he received the same award again. That same year he became the first non-English-speaking artist to be invited by MTV to perform an unplugged concert.
Herbert Grönemeyer's album 'Mensch' (2002) remains the best-selling album of all time in Germany. Although he recorded his first English-language album in 1991 ('Luxus') and has produced several since then, Grönemeyer is virtually unknown outside of the German-speaking market. Despite his MTV appearance, the bulk of Grönemeyer’s work has been in German. His attempts to break into the English-language music market have never been very successful. A tour of Canada following the release of his album 'What’s All This?'(1988) failed to ignite any sparks in the US. A planned 2007 concert in New York City was cancelled, but he did give a concert in London’s Royal Albert Hall in September 2007, as part of the success of the album '12' His 2002 album 'Mensch' considered by most fans and critics to be his musical masterpiece, arose out of tragedy. During the four years prior to 'Mensch', Grönemeyer was also pretty much forgotten, even in Germany. The explanation for this is simple: 1998, by any definition was an annus horribilis for Grönemeyer. He lost both his brother Wilhelm and his wife Anna to cancer within three days of each other. The tragic double loss made Grönemeyer withdraw almost entirely from public life and recording. He took a timeout and moved to London with his son Felix and daughter Marie.
London has proved to be a creative reservoir for Grönemeyer. In the British capital he has been working with British producer Alex Silva. The result has been three of Grönemeyer’s best albums: 'Bleibt alles anders', '12' and, most notably, 'Mensch'.
For the Football World Cup games in Germany in 2006, Grönemeyer composed and recorded the official anthem 'Zeit, dass sich was dreht'.
Grönemeyer, a longtime social activist, is a board member of Deine Stimme gegen Armut (Your Voice Against Poverty).

Herbert Grönemeyer - Männer (1984)

Lyrics:

Männer kriegen keine Kinder,
Männer kriegen dünnes Haar,
Männer sind auch Menschen,
Männer sind etwas sonderbar und
Männer sind so verletzlich,
Männer sind auf dieser Welt einfach unersetzlich.

Männer haben's schwer, nehmen's leicht.
außen hart und innen ganz weich,
werden als Kind schon auf Mann geeicht.
Wann ist ein Mann ein Mann?

English translation:

Men take you in their arms
Men give comfort
Men cry secretly
Men need a lot of tenderness and
Men are so vulnerable
Men are just irreplacable in this world

Men buy women
Men are always on the run
Men flirt like crazy
Men lie on the telephone
Men are ready all the time
Men captivate with their money and nonchalance

Men have a hard life, but take it easy
Hard on the outside, soft at the inside
When being a child they already are turned into men
When is a man a man?

When is a man a man?

Men have muscles
Men are so strong
Men can do everything
Men get a heart attack and
Men are lonely fighters
Have to get through every wall, always have to go on

Men have a hard life, but take it easy
Hard on the outside, soft at the inside
When being a child they already are turned into men
When is a man a man?

Men lead wars
Men are already drunk when they are yet babies
Men smoke pipe
Men are extremly clever
Men build rockets
Men do everything, yes exactly

When is a man a man?

Men get no children
Men get thin hair
Men are human beings too
Men are a bit strange and
Man are so vulnerable
Men are just irreplacable in this world

Lyrics:

Deutsch, deutsch, deutsch...

Schwein!

Schwein, Schwein...

Das alles ist Deutschland...

English translation:

German, German, German...

Of course a German invented 'Wetten, dass...?' (a very popular German TV show - 'You bet...')
Many thanks for the enjoyable hours
We're the friendliest customers in this world
We're modest - we have money
The very best in any sport
The taxes here set a world record
Visit Germany and stay here
It's this kind of visitor we wait for
Anyone who likes it can live here
We're the friendliest people in this world

German, German...

Just one little thing is out of whack
And that is, Schumacher doesn't drive a Mercedes

All that is Germany - all that is us
You won't find that anywhere else - only here only here
All that is Germany - all that is us
We live and die here

German, German...

Many people are arrogant about Germany
And some think it's cool to be an a**hole
There are some who like to complain about Kanaken [foreigners]
And travel to Thailand every year to f***
We love our cars more than our women
Because we can trust German cars
God kissed the earth just once
Right on the spot where Germany is now
We're the best everywhere - naturally also in bed
And we're especially nice to dogs and cats

All that is Germany...

We're really good at busting someone in the chops
We can also be relied on for starting fires
We like order and cleanliness
We're always ready for a war
Friendly greetings to the world, understand
We can be proud of Germany... Swine!

Swine, swine...

All that is Germany...

Lyrics:

I let it fall, my heart
And as it fell, you rose to claim it
It was dark and I was over
Until you kissed my lips and you saved me

My hands, they're strong
But my knees were far too weak
To stand in your arms
Without falling to your feet

But there's a side to you that I never knew, never knew
All the things you'd say, they were never true, never true
And the games you play, you would always win, always win

But I set fire to the rain
Watched it pour as I touched your face
Let it burn while I cry
'Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name

When laying with you
I could stay there, close my eyes
Feel you here, forever
You and me together, nothing is better

'Cause there's a side to you that I never knew, never knew
All the things you'd say, they were never true, never true
And the games you'd play, you would always win, always win

But I set fire to the rain
Watched it pour as I touched your face
Let it burn while I cried
'Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name

I set fire to the rain
And I threw us into the flames
Where I felt somethin' die, 'cause I knew that
That was the last time, the last time

Sometimes I wake up by the door
Now that you've gone, must be waiting for you
Even now when it's already over
I can't help myself from looking for you

I set fire to the rain
Watched it pour as I touched your face
Let it burn while I cried
'Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name

I set fire to the rain
And I threw us into the flames
Where I felt somethin' die
'Cause I knew that that was the last time, the last time, oh

Oh, no
Let it burn, oh
Let it burn
Let it burn

Aéroport, aérogare
Mais pour tout l'or m'en aller
C'est le blues, l' coup d' cafard
Le check out assuré
Vienne la nuit et sonne l'heure
Et moi je meurs
Entre apathie et pesanteur
Où je demeure
Changer d'optique, prendre l'exit

C'est l'osmose, on the road
Qui me décale
Six a.m., j'suis offset
J'suis l'ice dans l'eau, j'suis mélo, dis

Lyrics:

Sensitive child
Keep running wild
In a confined space
But you're not to blame
'Cause you're not the same
Get on the case

Crazy sheep, you are the odd one out
Crazy sheep, let them know what you're all about

Misfit
Freak that's on the street
Well I can see the sorrow in your eyes
How long? How low? How high can you go?
There'll be a bind for every kind
You'll see

Sensitive child
Your threat is so mild
It worries me
Build yourself some protection
To avoid the injection
Then you can be happy

Crazy sheep you are the odd on out
Crazy sheep let them know what you're all about

Misfit
Freak that's on the street
Now I can see the sorrow in your eyes
How long? How low? How high can you go?
There'll be a bind for every kind
You'll see

Set your mode to emotion
Your secret potion
Designed to satisfy your soul
And underneath
Your broken dreams
You need to satisfy your soul

Misfit
Freak that's on the street
Now I can see the sorrow in your eyes
How long? How low? How high can you go?
There'll be a bind for every kind
You'll see

Too fat, too thin, you lose or you win
This may come as some surprise
Too tall, too short, too loose or too taut
There'll be a bind for every kind

Misfit
Freak that's on the street
Now I can see the sorrow in your eyes
How long? How low? How high can you go?

Too fat, too thin, you lose or you win
This may come as some surprise
Too tall, too short, too loose or too taut
There'll be a bind for every kind...

Lyrics:

Wie kein and'rer Planet

Wie kein and'rer Planet
Dann haben wir umsonst gelebt

I feel I'm fallin' apart 'cos I know
I've lost my guardian angel.
A fleetin' glimpse of your heart
losin' right from the start - no return
An' things will never be the same.
I feel I'm fallin' apart 'cos I know
I've lost my guardian angel.
A fleetin' glimpse of your heart
losin' right from the start - no return
An' things will never be the same.

Try to find the words that show I sympathise
words of comfort Words that never criticise
though I know you simply laughin' at me
I just can't stop an' simply let it be.

Where are all those feelin's of my yesterdays
Feelin's now I have bring back those bad ole ways.
Though I know you wanna turn an' blow
I just can't stop an' simply let you go.

I feel I'm fallin' apart 'cos I know
I've lost my guardian angel.
A fleetin' glimpse of your heart
losin' right from the start - no return
An' things will never be the same.
I feel I'm fallin' apart 'cos I know
I've lost my guardian angel.
A fleetin' glimpse of your heart losin'
right from the start - no return
An' things will never be the same.

Let me see you smile once more that special way
warm as summer On a chilly winter's day
though I know you're simply laughin' at me
I just can't stop an' simply let it be.

Italian:

Se ritroviamo la felicità
Sarà la valle dell' Eden
In ogni strada, in ogni città
Un bel raggio vedrai
E nella valle dell' Eden sarai
Se hai l'amore la dentro di te
Trovi la valle dell' Eden
È un paese dove notte non c'è
Troppo lontano non è
Cerchi la valle dell' Eden in te

In un mondo dove niente vale più
Anche ridere ti può buttare giù
Ma se ti volgi intorno a te
Ritroverai la pace dentro di te

Se ritroviamo la felicità
Sarà la valle dell' Eden
In ogni strada, in ogni città
Un bel raggio vedrai
E nella valle dell' Eden sarai
sì, nella valle dell'eden sarai

Certamento lo splendore lo vedrai
E l'amore nel tuo cuore sentirai
Quando cerchi la semplicità
Arriverai e troverai il tuo Eden

Se hai l'amore la dentro di te
Trovi la valle dell' Eden
In ogni strada, in ogni città
Un bel raggio vedrai
E nella valle dell' Eden sarai

Se ritroviamo la felicità
Sarà la valle dell' Eden
In ogni strada, in ogni città
Un bel raggio vedrai
E nella valle dell' Eden sarai
sì, nella valle dell'eden sarai
sì, nella valle dell'eden sarai

To get through to you
Cause I love you baby
Standing here
Baptized in all my tears

Erin McKeown - Cosmopolitans (Tri-Factor Remix)

Erin's usual forte lies in folk-rock, but she has also explored the pop, indie, jazz and swing avenues. Her track 'Cosmopolitans' lies within those bands. Her record company Righteous Babe/Nettwerk Records has tried something new with it I learned to love: handing it to remixers on the electronic dance side. The result: the Tri-Factor Mix. Mark recommends!

Erin McKeown - Cosmopolitans (Tri-Factor Remix)

Lyrics:

Cosmopolitans and ladies
Looking for pills in draperies
Separate bedrooms and attached baths
While the precious don't quite understand and
Quietly slip off to beauty

Painless! don't you wish you were weightless!
Famous! from this moment you're fated!

Panic! makes quite a morning cocktail of insecurity
A fallen pancake breakfast for two and
The ladies choice of partners varies
From evening to evening
The loneliness is expected if not predicted

Small time! and you're dreaming of the big lights!
Screen life! you went looking for a good time!
Painless! don't you wish you were weightless!
Famous! from this moment you're fated!

A life on the boards spilled over to the coast
And maybe down to the beach
It's a new medium pleasure to
Re-take and re-shoot only
To pull focus before distribution

Small time! and you're dreaming of the big lights!
Screen life! you went looking for a good time!
Painless! don't you wish you were weightless!
Famous! from this moment you're fated!

Advice, agents, and taped late night whiskey
Tiny cups for a tiny lady
Opera heels are swiftly growing indecent
And a lady in descent
Falling forward towards the
Cosmopolitans and ladies
Looking for pills in draperies

Small time! and you're dreaming of the big lights!
Screen life! you went looking for a good time!
Painless! don't you wish you were weightless!
Famous! from this moment you're fated!

Camouflage - Suspicious Love (1993)

Heiko Maile, Marcus Meyn & Oliver Kreyssig, a.k.a. Camouflage, a German synth-pop trio recorded music from 1983. The Great Commandment, 4 years later bought their breakthrough. 'Love is a Shield' followed in 1989, and 1993 they released 'Suspicious Love', personally my favourite track by them. Their influence is blatant. Mark recommends :-)

Camouflage - Suspicious Love (1993)

Lyrics:

Try to tell me something,
try to tell me how it feels,
build it up to beat it down again,
all the things you're hiding,
all the games you play with me,
build it up to beat it down again.
Suspicious love,
froze my natural laugh,
and I need to change,
but something keeps me here.
I feel I know,
I won't let it grow,
and I need to change,
but something keeps me here,
I refuse to crawl.
Got to tell you something,
got to tell you how it feels,
once built up and beaten down again.
Promises once spoken,
all the warmth you gave to me
Leave me always somehow inbetween.
[...]
I'd like to see you crawling.

12" Version of the Soul Avengerz Mix

Lyrics:

So take me by the hand
Just take me way up high
To wonderland with you
'Cause I love the things you do

Biding my time
Letting it flow
Line up the line
Setting my goal
Heading for you
What I've been waiting this time for

Tease
Let them fall in
Just to feel love
Flowing again
Trust in the ride
Pushing me forward
What we were waiting this line for

And out of each way
Come bringing us change
Disco soul
I'm on my way
You'll come around
I waited so long
So we may walk in sunshine today

So take me by the hand
Just take me way up high
To wonderland with you
'Cause I love the things you do

You, heading this way
No time to lose
It better be fate
Face to the sun
It's time to go
And now my feet just keep on rolling

And out of each way
Come bringing us change
Disco soul
I'm on my way
You'll come around
I waited so long
So we may walk in sunshine today

So take me by the hand
Just take me way up high
To wonderland with you
'Cause I love the things you do

Well I do
When daylight comes in ___
I've been moving my spirit to find you
'Cause it's taken so long to ___
And it's all about the love we know

Biding my time
Letting it flow
Line up the line
Setting my goals
Heading for you
What I've been waiting this time for

Tease
Let them fall in
Just to feel love
Flowing again
Trust in the ride
Pushing me forward
What we were waiting this line for

And out of each way
Come bringing us change
Disco soul
I'm on my way
You'll come around
I waited so long
So we may walk in sunshine today

So take me by the hand
Just take me way up high
To wonderland with you
'Cause I love the things you do

(I feel your soul insïde me)

UK music sales decline for 7th successive year...

UK music sales decline for seventh successive year despite downloads

Combined digital and physical album sales fall by 5.6% but British acts account for half of 2011's top 10 selling records

guardian.co.uk, Monday 2 January 2012

UK music sales have fallen again despite the success of homegrown artists such as Adele.
Despite the best efforts of Adele and Coldplay, the increasing popularity of digital downloads and even a modest resurgence in vinyl, music sales in the UK declined for a seventh successive year in 2011.
According to the latest figures from the BPI, combined sales of digital and physical albums fell overall by 5.6% to 113.2m last year. At the industry peak in 2004, 163.4m albums were sold.
Although digital album sales rose 26.6% to 26.6m, the growth failed to offset the sharp drop in sales of albums on compact disc, which fell by 12.6% year on year to 86.2m. A further 389,000 albums were sold on vinyl and other formats.

The statistics cap yet another turbulent 12 months for the British music industry, which is struggling to cope with losing hundreds of millions of pounds each year to illegal downloads. In November, the debt-ridden record giant EMI – home to the Beatles, Coldplay and Tinie Tempah – was broken up and sold to two of its former rivals, Universal Music and Sony, for £2.5bn.
In the same month, the former Undertones singer Feargal Sharkey resigned as chief executive of the industry body UK Music, which has campaigned on copyright and piracy issues.

While sales may be on the wane – and illegal downloading on the rise – CDs remain the nation's favoured format, accounting for 76.1% of total sales last year, compared with a 23.5% market share for digital and 0.3% for vinyl.
Geoff Taylor, the chief executive of the BPI, said reports of the CD's demise had been greatly exaggerated. "British music fans understand that the album remains the richest way to connect with an artist's work," he said. "Digital developments grab the headlines, but the CD remains hugely popular with consumers, accounting for three-quarters of album sales.
"Physical ownership is important to many fans and the CD will be a key element of the market for years to come."

The figures show that digital album downloads have grown, with 15 albums selling more than 100,000 digital copies in 2011. Sales of vinyl LPs, meanwhile, rose by more than a third (43.7%) during 2011 to 337,000 – their highest showing since 2005.

In the UK singles market records were broken for the fourth year in a row with sales increasing by 10% to 177.9m in 2011. Adele proved to be the biggest commercial hit of 2011, with her album, 21, topping the charts after selling 3.8m copies — astonishingly more than double the 1.8m sales achieved by 2010's top album, Take That's Progress. Her debut album, 19, was the fourth bestselling record of the year.

The London-born singer/songwriter also claimed two places in the 2011 year-end singles chart. The recorded and live performance of Someone Like You – recorded at the 2011 Brit awards – together sold 1.2m copies to become the top-selling single of 2011 overall, with her other single, Rolling in the Deep, also ending the year at number nine.
Her success is all the more striking given that she is signed to the independent XL label.
Three other UK acts signed to major record labels – Coldplay, Jessie J and Ed Sheeran – helped ensure that half the top 10 selling artist albums in 2011 were British.
The BPI praised homegrown artists for producing "incredible music that resonates at home and around the world", but said they were not getting the legal support they needed from Westminster.
"While other countries take positive steps to protect their creative sector, our government is taking too long to act on piracy, while weakening copyright to the benefit of US tech giants," said Taylor.
"The UK has already fallen behind Germany as a music market."
He added: "Unless decisive action is taken in 2012, investment in music could fall again – a creative crunch that will destroy jobs and mean the next Adele may not get her chance to shine on the world stage."

Would Adele be as successful if signed to a major label?

Would Adele have been as successful if she was signed to a major label?
Adele is an exceptional artist, but she has also been nurtured by her indie label. It's doubtful a major would have done the same

Record label trade organisation BPI has published its end of year sales statistics and, unsurprisingly, Adele tops both the singles (Someone Like You) and album charts (21). But what the stats also reveal is some of the majors' ineptitude to develop proper album-artist careers. Sony Music doesn't have a single album in the top 10, despite the fact it usually accounts for more than 20% of record sales. And in the singles charts it only has one entry, at No 6: Give Me Everything by Pitbull, Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer.
EMI doesn't fare much better. None of its acts features in the singles chart and only Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto made the album top 10, in fifth place. Compare this to Adele's label, XL Recordings (part of independent label group Beggars), which has two records in each top 10 (they're all by Adele, but still). Meanwhile, Warner, whose market share is often less than half of Sony's has three albums in the top 10: Michael Bublé (2), Bruno Mars (3) and Ed Sheeran (9). Universal – the biggest company – has four albums in the chart: Rihanna (6 and 10), Lady Gaga (7) and Jessie J (8).
So what's gone wrong? In the UK it appears Sony has put all its eggs in The X Factor basket (Simon Cowell's Syco label is a Sony imprint and is partnered with the talent show), possibly arguing the number of votes an act gets is ample enough consumer research to make a signing a sure bet. It can also leave you stuck with a roster of old contestants no one is interested in. As Universal has partnered with new talent show The Voice it seems short-term thinking is alive and well, and it remains to be seen if that talent show is able to create artists with long-term careers. I have my doubts.
But the problem runs deeper. The BPI spins the chart results as a triumph for British artists, as they take up half of the top 10, but 40% of the Brits are Adele. As her albums are at No 1 and No 4, she's outsold the others by a mile with 21 selling 3.8m ahead of Bublé with 1.3m.
It's not just that Adele is an exceptional artist – she's been supported and developed by her label. Would she have been as successful if she'd been signed to a major? Would she have been asked to lose weight and get some media training to be more polished when dealing with journalists? Would she have been put together with younger and "hipper" songwriter/producers than the former lead singer of Semisonic and Rick Rubin to make sure she'd succeed? Probably.
Yet labels are now all looking to sign "the next Adele". Maybe they should instead heed the advice of Richard Russell, CEO of XL Recordings: "The problem in this business is that too many records are put out. There can only be one great artist in every scene. Scenes tend to create a lot of mediocrity."
Instead of signing loads of acts, hoping that one of them sticks, Russell keeps his roster small. The label usually doesn't release more than six albums a year. Like all indies, it can't give huge advances to artists, instead it attracts new artists owing to who is already signed. Its current roster includes the Horrors, Friendly Fires, Tyler the Creator, MIA, Beck, the White Stripes, the xx and Radiohead.
The more money spent on artists, the bigger the pressure to deliver as quickly as possible, as shareholders want to see a return on their investment. The knee-jerk reaction has been to focus on singles, catering to music fans who cherry-pick tracks on iTunes. But hit singles do not equal long-term careers and album sales – connection with the artist does. Black Eyed Peas, for example, have had some of the biggest singles in the last decade, but they're really only as popular as their latest, as they don't inspire anywhere near the devotion Adele does (her album 21 sold more than three times as many copies as the single Someone Like You).
Some believe Adele has been successful because her music is aimed at older people who still buy CDs, but I'd argue more young girls identify with her than with, for example, Pixie Lott or Leona Lewis. And in 10 years' time, more people will pay to see Adele live than either of those acts.
The good news to take from the BPI and Official Charts Company report is people have not completely stopped buying albums – the fact Adele broke the record for selling the most albums in a calendar year ever proves as much. There is no way of guaranteeing long-term success in the record industry, and that's what makes it such an exciting place. But one thing does seem predictable: the more you try to go for a perceived "sure bet", the more likely you are to lose in the long run.

Lyrics:

Fancy me
Thought I had my degree
In life and how love
Ought to be a run
I had a one step plan to prove it
Guide in my pocket for fools
Folly and fun
Love had to show me one thing

I was so right (so right)
So right
Thought I could turn emotion
On and off
I was so sure
So sure (I was so sure)
But love taught me
Who was, who was, who was the boss

I'd defy
Anyone who claimed that I
Didn't control
Whatever moved in my soul
I could tempt
Touch delight
Just because you fell for me
Why should I feel uptight
Love had to show me one thing

I was so right (so right)
So right
Thought I could turn emotion
On and off
I was so sure
So sure (I was so sure)
But love taught me
Who was, who was, who was the boss

Love taught me
Taught me
Taught me
Taught me

I was so right (so right)
So right
Thought I could turn emotion
On and off
I was so sure
So sure (I was so sure)
But love taught me
Who was, who was, who was the boss
(Taught me who was, who was the boss)

Dirty Old Ann - Turn Me On (2006)

Legendary James Wiltshire, one half of the Freemasons, musical technician Vincent Morrisey of the Outsiders and producer Ann Jones, whose cleanliness (of lack thereof ;-) inspired the name of this project, in 2006 took on Kathy Brown's original of 1994 and delivered a track that can already comfortably count itself as a classic on the dance floor. This has been a major tune at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern all those years ago.

Dirty Old Ann - Turn Me On (2006)

Lyrics:

you're on my mind all day
'till i go to bed
whoo baby you're always on my head
all i ask for is a love to ease my mind
you..you got to work your love
coz i don't have much time
move your body to me
give give me that..give me that special treat
when we're making love
i wanna... i wanna feel the heat

turn me on
turn me out
make me scream
make me shout
Turn the music up

you're on my mind all day
'till i go to bed
whoo baby you're always on my head
all i ask for is a love to ease my mind
you..you got to work your love
coz i don't have much time
move your body to me
give give me that..give me that special treat
when we're making love
i wanna... i wanna feel the heat

You release me baby
got to have you near
make me burn burn burn
gotta have you here
turn the music up
don't wanna waste no time

working week can take long
i wanna lose my mind
move your body to me
give give me that..give me that special treat
when we're making love
i wanna... i wanna feel the heat

Turn the music up

turn me on
turn me out
make me scream
make me shout

You release me baby
got to have you near
make me burn burn burn
gotta have you here
turn the music up
don't wanna waste no time

working week can take long
i wanna lose my mind
move your body to me
give give me that..give me that special treat
when we're making love
i wanna... i wanna feel the heat

turn me on
turn me out
make me scream
make me shout

make me scream
