Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg - Je T'aime (1969)

'Je T'aime,...Moi Non Plus' is a - if not THE - classic French duet. It was written for and recorded with Serge Gainsbourg's then-girlfriend, Brigitte Bardot, in winter 1967. Brigitte asked him to write the most beautiful love song he could imagine and that night he wrote 'Je t'aime'. They recorded an arrangement by Michel Colombier at a Paris studio in a two-hour session in a small glass booth; the engineer William Flageollet said there was 'heavy petting' involved. But news of the recording reached the press and Brigitte's then-husband (yes, it appeared to be a very liberal interpretation of 'free love' back then), German businessman Gunter Sachs, was angry and called for the single to be withdrawn. Brigitte pleaded with Serge not to release it, and although he protested that 'The music is very pure. For the first time in my life, I write a love song and it's taken badly', he complied.
In 1968, Serge fell in love with English actress Jane Birkin on the set of their film 'Slogan'. After filming, he asked her to record the song with him. Jane had heard Brigitte's version and thought it hot. She said:' only sang it because I didn't want anybody else to sing it', jealous at the thought of his sharing a recording studio with someone else. Serge asked her to sing an octave higher than la B.B. It was recorded in an arrangement by Arthur Greenslade in a studio at Marble Arch. Jane said she 'got a bit carried away with the heavy breathing – so much so, in fact, that I was told to calm down, which meant that at one point I stopped breathing altogether. If you listen to the record now, you can still hear that little gap'.
There was media speculation, as with the Brigitte Bardot version, that they had recorded live sex, to which Serge told Jane: 'Thank goodness it wasn't, otherwise I hope it would have been a long-playing record'. The track was released in February 1969. The single had a plain cover, with the words 'Interdit aux moins de 21 ans' (forbidden to those under 21) - perhaps a predecessor of the modern-day 'Adult Guidance'. Brigitte Bardot regretted not releasing her version, and her friend Jean-Louis Remilleux persuaded her to contact Serge - they released it in 1986. The song has since been covered by many different artists, but obviously has never reached the original...

There is so much to say about Mylène Jeanne Gautier, a.k.a Mylène Farmer, born in 1961 in Pierrefonds, Quebec, Canada, that it is hard to narrate.

One thing is for sure: after discovering her tofit my musical taste, I would like to thank my friends Gwen, Florence and Laurent for introducing me to more of her work and making possible for me to attend the best live concert I have ever been to.

Mylène has sold more than 25 million records and is among the most successful recording artists of all time in France, so far landing ten #1s, which constitutes a record in the French Charts.
Her parents moved from France in the late 1950s as her father pursued an engineering contract on a dam. The family returned to France when she was eight, settling in the Parisian suburb of Ville d'Avray. At the age of 17 she discovered acting and took a course at a drama school in Paris. Changing her name to Mylène Farmer as a tribute to her idol, 1930s Hollywood actress Frances Farmer, she began to earn a living as a model acting in several TV ads. In 1984, Mylène met Laurent Boutonnat, a young film student, after replying to a newspaper ad for an actress for a small film he was working on. They became friends and forged a creative partnership, writing and producing the music. Boutonnat, whose ambition was to become a film director, was the force behind Mylène’s videos, which, as you will see, often become epic pieces.
Mylène gained fame with songs featuring shocking yet poetic lyrics, and explicit music videos: 'Maman a tort' was about the love of a young girl for her female hospital nurse. 'Pourvu qu'elles soient douces' contains hints of sodomy: the video, set in the 18th century, featured a caning. 'Libertine' is said to feature the first full frontal nudity appearance by a singer on a major music video. 'Que mon cœur lâche' was about love with condoms in the age of AIDS: the video for the song features a scene in which God tells Jesus he will not send him to Earth again because the last time 'it was a disaster'.
By the turn of the decade Farmer was a full-blown superstar in France, but it wasn't until the release of her third album, L'Autre..., and single 'Désenchantée' that she became iconic. The album's lead single, became a phenomenon in French pop music, striking a universal chord with its political lyrics. The song debuted at #12 in France and hit #1 two weeks later, remaining 9 weeks atop of the charts. Following the phenomenal success of 'Désenchantée', Mylène released three more singles from the album: 'Regrets', 'Je t'aime mélancolie' and 'Beyond My Control', the latter having a blood-and-sex-charged video that was banned from airplay. The success of the singles helped its album sell close to 2 million copies in France alone, having achieved Diamond status in 1992. It spent a then-record 20 weeks at #1 of the French charts, as well as topping the chart in Belgium and making top 10 in Canada. It has become Farmer's best selling studio album. On 14 November 1991 a man, who had been stalking her, entered the Polydor Records HQ in Paris and held employees at gunpoint demanding to talk to her. The man had previously written the singer some fan mail, which she did not respond to. He killed a receptionist and committed suicide. Following this occurrence Mylène shunned media attention and left France to live in Los Angeles for a few weeks.
During her time in California, Mylène started to write her fourth album, Anamorphosée, before inviting Laurent Boutonnat over there to reconcile after the bitter incidents of 1994 and to start making music together again. In summer 1996 she embarked on her second, hugely successful, concert tour, which I was lucky enough to see at Paris Bercy, the French equivalent to Wembley. By the turn of the decade Farmer was a full-blown superstar in France, but it wasn't until the release of her third album, L'Autre..., and single 'Désenchantée' that she became iconic. The album's lead single, became a phenomenon in French pop music, striking a universal chord with its political lyrics. The song debuted at #12 in France and hit #1 two weeks later, remaining 9 weeks atop of the charts. Following the phenomenal success of 'Désenchantée', Mylène released three more singles from the album: 'Regrets', 'Je t'aime mélancolie' and 'Beyond My Control', the latter having a blood-and-sex-charged video that was banned from airplay. The success of the singles helped its album sell close to 2 million copies in France alone, having achieved Diamond status in 1992. It spent a then-record 20 weeks at #1 of the French charts, as well as topping the chart in Belgium and making top 10 in Canada. It has become Farmer's best selling studio album. On 14 November 1991 a man, who had been stalking her, entered the Polydor Records HQ in Paris and held employees at gunpoint demanding to talk to her. The man had previously written the singer some fan mail, which she did not respond to. He killed a receptionist and committed suicide. Following this occurrence Mylène shunned media attention and left France to live in Los Angeles for a few weeks.
During her time in California, Mylène started to write her fourth album, Anamorphosée, before inviting Laurent Boutonnat over there to reconcile after the bitter incidents of 1994 and to start making music together again. In summer 1996 she embarked on her second, hugely successful, concert tour, which I was lucky enough to see at Paris Bercy, the French equivalent to Wembley. David Paparusso, a.k.a David Vendetta, started his career as DJ at Paris-based Radio FG 98.2. *** (see below)
Both, the station and the DJ caught my ears during my first visits to the French metropolis back in 1993/94. Here he met Antoine Clamaran. Both soon started producing tracks together and his popularity rocketed. As reputation in the DJ scene goes, the word soon got round to Roger Sanchez, for whom he also remixed.

My favourite song of his is 'Unidos Para La Musica', part of his 2007 album 'Rendez-Vous'. Vocals come courtesy of Akram.

Alizée was discovered by Mylène Farmer, following her winning performance in the talent show 'Graines de Star' in 1999. J. Birkin & S. Gainsbourg - Je T'aime (1967/69)

'Je T'aime,...Moi Non Plus' is a - if not THE - classic French duet. It was written for and recorded with Serge Gainsbourg's then-girlfriend, Brigitte Bardot, in winter 1967. Brigitte asked him to write the most beautiful love song he could imagine and that night he wrote 'Je t'aime'. They recorded an arrangement by Michel Colombier at a Paris studio in a two-hour session in a small glass booth; the engineer William Flageollet said there was 'heavy petting' involved. But news of the recording reached the press and Brigitte's then-husband (yes, it appeared to be a very liberal interpretation of 'free love' back then), German businessman Gunter Sachs, was angry and called for the single to be withdrawn. Brigitte pleaded with Serge not to release it, and although he protested that 'The music is very pure. For the first time in my life, I write a love song and it's taken badly', he complied.
In 1968, Serge fell in love with English actress Jane Birkin on the set of their film 'Slogan'. After filming, he asked her to record the song with him. Jane had heard Brigitte's version and thought it hot. She said:' only sang it because I didn't want anybody else to sing it', jealous at the thought of his sharing a recording studio with someone else. Serge asked her to sing an octave higher than la B.B. It was recorded in an arrangement by Arthur Greenslade in a studio at Marble Arch. Jane said she 'got a bit carried away with the heavy breathing – so much so, in fact, that I was told to calm down, which meant that at one point I stopped breathing altogether. If you listen to the record now, you can still hear that little gap'.
There was media speculation, as with the Brigitte Bardot version, that they had recorded live sex, to which Serge told Jane: 'Thank goodness it wasn't, otherwise I hope it would have been a long-playing record'. The track was released in February 1969. The single had a plain cover, with the words 'Interdit aux moins de 21 ans' (forbidden to those under 21) - perhaps a predecessor of the modern-day 'Adult Guidance'. Brigitte Bardot regretted not releasing her version, and her friend Jean-Louis Remilleux persuaded her to contact Serge - they released it in 1986. The song has since been covered by many different artists, but obviously has never reached the original...

Singing royalty? But of course. In the 80s that was far from unthinkable. But fear not, I won't give you our dear Lizzy giving her vocal best in the shower...

...instead I give you Princess Stéphanie of Monaco, daughter of Grace Kelly and Rainier Louis Henri Maxence Bertrand Grimaldi, otherwise known as Rainer III of Monaco. While the famous couple (both of them have since died: Grace Kelly in the infamous 1982 car crash and Rainier in 2005) also hhad two other children, Albert II and Princess Caroline, their mother always called Stéphanie lovingly her 'Wild Child'. And perhaps rightly so, she has been a swimwear designer and fashion model, but in the 80s she was widely known for her youthful attempts to make it big in the music industry.
In February 1986, Stéphanie self produced and released her first single with the French label 'Carrere', under the production of Yves Roze. The song 'Ouragan (Hurricane) and its English version 'Irresistible' quickly reached the international Top10, selling more than 2 million copies.
In September, she released a full album called Besoin reportedly selling more than 1.5 million copies (also released as Stéphanie in some countries) with eight new songs, including 'Flash' (in French; its English version 'One Love To Give'), which was released as a single and reached top spots all over Europe.

Vanessa Paradis

Vanessa (Chantal) Paradis born two days before Christmas 1972. Her first TV appearance was on the show L'École des fans in 1981. She recorded her first single, 'La Magie des surprises-parties' in 1983 and performed it at an Italian festival in 1985 - but lost the first prize. Although the song was not a hit, it paved the way for the song with which she would become internationally famous: Her breakthrough came in 1987, aged 14. Her single 'Joe le Taxi' spent 11 weeks at the top of the French charts, and also proved an international success. It is a song about a taxi driver, Joe, who works in Paris. The song emphasizes the notion that Joe seems to know all of the French capital including the whereabouts of all the little bars, all of the Parisian streets, the Seine, and bridges. The song's lyrics suggest that Joe enjoys drinking rum, has a passion for Latin music and his saxophone, and dreams of going to the Amazon.

Vanessa recorded two albums in Paris before traveling to New York in 1992 to record her self-titled English-language debut, with one-time boyfriend Lenny Kravitz as producer. The album's "Be My Baby" was also a hit, but Vanessa's popularity waned a bit. She was involved in various film, TV and modeling engagementsm such as Chanel's Coco ad campaign. More film and modelling work followed throughout the next several years, largely replacing her music career for a time. In early 2000 she returned to the music scene with the French-released Bliss, followed by a live album, Au Zénith in 2001. After that, it was back to yet more film and modelling work (and quality time with the two-child family she built with actor Johnny Depp). Paradis returned to music once again in 2007 with the release of her fifth full-length album, Divinidylle.

Guesch Patti

Patricia Porasse, a.k.a. Guesch Patti, born 1946 in Paris, is no easy listening. She burst on the stage in 1987, and although I did not (and sadly still do not) understand the French language sufficiently enough, Guesch Patti intrigued me to follow her further, beyond her very popular song 'Etienne', which, at the time, was censored by several TV stations due to the suggestive video accompanying her debut...

Guesch chose her stagename from the nickname she had as a child Guesch. Patti is a nickname for Patricia. She first started her career dancing at age of 9 when she performed in a ballet at the Opéra National de Paris. After having accompanied the pianist Yves Gilbert, she decided to begin a singing career and, in 1965, recorded two albums, which passed unnoticed. In 1984 she briefy joined the trio named 'Dacapo'. Three years later she published above mentioned single with her band Encore. The album Labyrinthe followed soon after.
Perhaps due to her controversial lyrics, which range from gender change to criticising the French 'elite', political and otherwise, her subsequent albums Nomades and Gobe were critically well received but not as commercially successful. She certainly continued to capture my interest.
In 1995, her next album, Blonde, strongly marked a musical shift and a more electronic experimentation, with less commercial sounds and new collaborations with many artists including Étienne Daho ('Blonde') and Françoise Hardy ('Un peu, beaucoup'). There were three single releases from this album : 'La Marquise', 'Blonde' and 'Amnésie'.
The British filmmaker Peter Greenaway chose it for the soundtrack of his film 'The Pillow Book' in 1996.
The fifth album, Dernières Nouvelles, released in 2000, highlighted a painful and romance-drama ambiance, strongly tinged with loneliness. A complimenting DVD completed the album, containing choreographed performances and a false interview dealing with existential problems and the condition of the artist.
Following the failure of these albums, Guesch decided to abandon music and diversify her artistic experiences. She then continued her dancing career, especially with the show entitled 'Elle sourit aux larmes', presented at the Theatre des Abbesses in 2001. She also appeared in films, making a brief appearance in Claude Lelouch's film 'Une pour toutes', and also played in 'Elles', alongside Miou-Miou, Marthe Keller, Marisa Berenson and Carmen Maura. She continued to go on stage, with plays such as L'Opéra de quat'sous, Les Monologues du vagin and Jésus Camacho 404 284.
Guesch is currenty working on another album, which I will be awaiting with excited anticipation.

There is so much to say about Mylène Jeanne Gautier, a.k.a Mylène Farmer, born in 1961 in Pierrefonds, Quebec, Canada, that it is hard to narrate.

One thing is for sure: after discovering her tofit my musical taste, I would like to thank my friends Gwen, Florence and Laurent for introducing me to more of her work and making possible for me to attend the best live concert I have ever been to.

Mylène has sold more than 25 million records and is among the most successful recording artists of all time in France, so far landing ten #1s, which constitutes a record in the French Charts.
Her parents moved from France in the late 1950s as her father pursued an engineering contract on a dam. The family returned to France when she was eight, settling in the Parisian suburb of Ville d'Avray. At the age of 17 she discovered acting and took a course at a drama school in Paris. Changing her name to Mylène Farmer as a tribute to her idol, 1930s Hollywood actress Frances Farmer, she began to earn a living as a model acting in several TV ads. In 1984, Mylène met Laurent Boutonnat, a young film student, after replying to a newspaper ad for an actress for a small film he was working on. They became friends and forged a creative partnership, writing and producing the music. Boutonnat, whose ambition was to become a film director, was the force behind Mylène’s videos, which, as you will see, often become epic pieces.
Mylène gained fame with songs featuring shocking yet poetic lyrics, and explicit music videos: 'Maman a tort' was about the love of a young girl for her female hospital nurse. 'Pourvu qu'elles soient douces' contains hints of sodomy: the video, set in the 18th century, featured a caning. 'Libertine' is said to feature the first full frontal nudity appearance by a singer on a major music video. 'Que mon cœur lâche' was about love with condoms in the age of AIDS: the video for the song features a scene in which God tells Jesus he will not send him to Earth again because the last time 'it was a disaster'.

The album's lead single, became a phenomenon in French pop music, striking a universal chord with its political lyrics. The song debuted at #12 in France and hit #1 two weeks later, remaining 9 weeks atop of the charts. Following the phenomenal success of 'Désenchantée', Mylène released three more singles from the album: 'Regrets', 'Je t'aime mélancolie' and 'Beyond My Control', the latter having a blood-and-sex-charged video that was banned from airplay. The success of the singles helped its album sell close to 2 million copies in France alone, having achieved Diamond status in 1992. It spent a then-record 20 weeks at #1 of the French charts, as well as topping the chart in Belgium and making top 10 in Canada. It has become Farmer's best selling studio album. On 14 November 1991 a man, who had been stalking her, entered the Polydor Records HQ in Paris and held employees at gunpoint demanding to talk to her. The man had previously written the singer some fan mail, which she did not respond to. He killed a receptionist and committed suicide. Following this occurrence Mylène shunned media attention and left France to live in Los Angeles for a few weeks.
During her time in California, Mylène started to write her fourth album, Anamorphosée, before inviting Laurent Boutonnat over there to reconcile after the bitter incidents of 1994 and to start making music together again. In summer 1996 she embarked on her second, hugely successful, concert tour, which I was lucky enough to see at Paris Bercy, the French equivalent to Wembley.
