Q: What have Alizée Jacotey, known as Alizée, and Napoleon Bonaparte in common?
A: Both were born on Corsica.

Alizée was discovered by Mylène Farmer, following her winning performance in the talent show 'Graines de Star' in 1999. While collaborating with Mylène Farmer and Laurent Boutonnat, Alizée released four studio albums - first two of which were composed by Laurent Boutonnat and written by Mylène Farmer. Her first album received Platinum within three months of release. It was a success both in France and abroad, earning Alizée the distinction of being the highest selling female French singer in 2001.
The album featured her most successful single 'Moi... Lolita', which reached number one in several countries in Europe and East Asia.
Alizée married fellow French singer Jérémy Chatelain in late 2003. Her latest album, entitled 'Une Enfant Du Siècle' was released in March 2010 and showcases her new mature persona, while distancing herself from her earlier Lolita figure.

Pierre Michael Schilling, better known as Peter Schilling, born 1958 in Stuttgart, Germany, had a massive, and commercially most-successful NDW (Neue Deutsche Welle, 'New German Wave') hit with Major Tom, a character unofficially related to Major Tom, the theme of David Bowie's 1969 album Space Oddity. The song is about the character being caught in an accident in space. On of my favourite songs of the German 1980s.
Of his follow-up songs only Terra Titanic, which I almost prefer, made it anywhere near the significance.
In 1989 Peter suffered from Burn-Out-Syndrome.

Urban Cookie Collective

Rohan Heath was the driving force behind the Urban Cookie Collective, having worked before with Yargo and A Guy Called Gerald.
The group's original vocalist was Diane Charlemagne, who co-wrote some of their tracks with Rohan, and now works with Moby. The other main members were Simon Bentall, Peter Samson, Johnny Jay, Mark Hadfield & Neil Claxton. Guest rappers occasionally took part in the studio.
Rohan had learned classical piano and decided on a career in music after abandoning a PhD at University of Vermont. After a tour of Japan supporting the Happy Mondays, he left A Guy Called Gerald. He later joined Together a band created by Manchester's Haçienda regulars Suddi Raval and Jon Donaghy. Together's single "Hardcore Uproar", made number 12 in the UK Singles Chart in August 1990. After a brief stint with Eek A Mouse, Rohan created the Urban Cookie Collective, a bunch of Manchester-based record producers songwriters and musicians.
They achieved their major breakthrough in 1993 with 'The Key The Secret'. After a subsequent remix it was picked up by the Pulse 8 record label. The track entered the UK chart twice more in 1996 and 2005 in remixed formats.
The band remain active and still maintain a busy concert schedule.
The Urban Cookie Collective was a solid staple in my musical orientation between 1993 and 1995, often dancing with then on stage in London clubs.

Haddaway

Anyone who was Teen-age - or early Twen - living through the Euro-Dance time of the early 1990s and claiming that he or she didn't get hooked by Haddaway - at least a little weeny guilty pleasurish kinda bit - is lying.
Alexander Nestor Haddaway was born 1965 on the Carribean island of Trinidad. The son of a Dutch oceanographer and a Trinidadian nurse, Haddaway moved from Trinidad to Holland (oooups, The Netherlands) in the early 1970s with his dad when his parents separated. After his school years, he moved to the US to be with his mum. Discovering a love for music in his high school years in Maryland, US, he was very active in the school's jazz, marching, symphonic, and stage bands.
In 1989, aged 24, Haddaway returned to Europe, settling in Cologne, Germany, where he started playing American football as well as working as a choreographer, and carpet salesman.
Haddaway's break came in 1992 when he was signed by German label Coconut Records. His first single What Is Love rapidly became popular across Europe. Stratospheric Euro Dance stardom led him to record his first album, which turned out to be a multi-million seller. By that time most of Europe (including the UK, don't deny it ;-) was on fire. Euro Dance was the flavour of the day: Snap, Technotronic and the like would literally storm the charts.
But only 2 years later musical tastes started to change: people, at least in the UK, grew tired of it and, similar to Modern Talking in the 1980s, developed a certain cynicysm towards it for its pure commercial intention. That mood soon caught on on continental Europe and already his third single release Rock My Heart 'flopped' by comparison. If you're scoring a #25 with a hyped track in Germany, you know you're in trouble and better adapt. This is where Haddaway's management failed.
Apart from occasional appearances of 'What is Love' on wedding receptions and retro events, there is not much to be heard from Haddaway, musically. Haddaway now lives in Kitzbühel, Austria, which speaks for itself. I mean, Kitzbühel!!!!
What Is Love enjoyed a resurge in popularity as the theme music for the head bobbing, nightclubbing addicted Butabi brothers (Will Ferrell & Chris Kattan) on Saturday Night Live and the subsequent film A Night at the Roxbury. The track was also featured in a 2008 Pepsi commercial, which parodied the Leitmotif and included several stars including LL Cool J, Missy Elliot and Busta Rhymes, but - interestingly - not Haddaway... On Eminem's 2010 album Recovery, a sample of the song What Is Love is used for the track 'No Love' featuring Lil' Wayne.

Schiller - Dream of You (2001) + I Feel You (2004)

Taking their stage name from the famed German poet, the production duo of Schiller originally consisted of Mirko von Schlieffen & Christopher von Deylen and debuted in 1998 with Glockenspiel. The two layered trance beats and spoken poetry, which resulted in a couple of trance chart-toppers in Europe in the late '90s and early 2000. Zeitgeist marked the band's debut in early 2001. Schiller's second studio album Weltreise was inspired by a two-month-long road trip that Christopher took with his father from London to Beijing.
The duo soon had creative differences and Mirko departed, leaving Christopher to continue on his own.
Christopher does not provide vocals for any of his compositions. Instead, he chooses to collaborate with singers from within and outside of Germany. Musicians and vocalists who have worked with Schiller include Ben Becker, Moya Brennan of the Celtic group Clannad, Sarah Brightman, Peter Heppner of the German synth pop band Wolfsheim, Xavier Naidoo, Kim Sanders, Ana Torroja, lead singer of the Spanish pop group Mecano, Mike Oldfield, Damae of Fragma and many, many more.
Schiller's collaboration with Wolfsheim's Peter Heppner resulted in 2 very distinctly melancholic tracks: 'Dream of You' and 'I Feel You'.
